Why was my cat afraid of my blood?

I had a minor cut on my big toe; it was superficial but it bled a lot. My cat just happened to be hanging around, so I stuck my foot under his nose to see what he would do. He sniffed the blood and immediately took off like the proverbial bat outta hell! Any idea why?

He thinks you’ve been attacked and doesn’t want the same to happen to him?

When my mother had fallen in the bathroom (and eventually died), there was a pool of blood under her head. When the paramedics came, they had propped the front door open. Around that time the cat walked into the bathroom, saw the blood, and zoomed downstairs and out the front door. I finally found him 18 days later.

Has your cat ever hunted live game or has he always lived indoors? It seems odd for a carnivore to be averse to blood.

Maybe he was trying to resist temptation.

I cut my finger in the kitchen once and held it under Dewey’s nose, just to see what he’d think about it. He sniffed it but kind of shrugged, like “No thanks, I had a big lunch.”

I had a similar, if less dramatic experience with my cat a few months ago.

I would have expected her to lap it up.

He’s been totally an outdoor cat since birth (he was feral) but I don’t think he hunts much.

I had a very similar experience, to add another sheet to the pile.

Stop inviting your cats to lick open wounds. Cats carry around just as many types of oral bacteria as you do.

A couple of months ago I had a cut and wiped the blood on my finger. My cat walked over so I put it in front of him. He took one sniff and his head shot back like he was disgusted and then walked away. That was a very unusual reaction and I wondered about it. He is an indoor cat and once killed a mouse, but that’s about it.
