You have got to be joking.
Mea culpa, RJKUgly: you’re right. I regret having made that post, and if you’re still reading this thread, Dex, I apologise.
Anyway, I’ve started a thread in the Pit {of all places} as a somewhat belated appeal for restraint:
Aw, nuts. Try this link, then:
Apology accepted, Case, no sweat, and I apologize if I was snarky. I’m actually at a hotel over the weekend for a family wedding, and I’m taking some time to help keep an eye on things, and I got a little edgy over requests for information about a returned banee. (Or banshee, if female.)
The fact is that we don’t generally give information about bannings except for long-term posters. The reasons are obvious: for long-term posters, there is usually a series of public warnings and postings, and we can reference them without any concerns of violating privacy – after all, the warnings were public. When we discussed changing the policy on providing information about bannings, this was a key point.
When it comes to one-time spammers, returned banees, sales-persons, porn-linkers and the like, we feel no need to provide information. I mean, what would we do, provide a link to the spam? Tell you who the returned banee was? That would be inherently self-defeating – that would keep the banee’s reputation “alive”. You want us to tell you how we identified them? No, thanks. We’d like to let these people be easily discovered, often by the same technique, in their next encounter. (Example: If we tell you that one clue was that the person used the same sig line quote as So-and-So, they’ll stop doing that.) So, we don’t provide information on our detective work. Except, I will say, it doesn’t (that’s does NOT) involve anything about credit cards, home addresses, etc.
Anyhow, that’s why there was no thread on neveronsunday. It was normal policy. When a thread was started, I got pissed – seems to me this whole to-do is about privacy vs regulation, and I saw this one as throwing kerosene on the fire. After that, I thought I did owe y’all the explanation that this was a previously banned person trying to sneak back in. And that wasn’t enough, someone asked for more? Forget it. We don’t provide information about the returning banned.
I Love Me, if you find yourself curious about a banned person and there’s no explanatory thread, please email a Mod and we can (probably) satisfy your curiousity off-board.
Since this discussion about a returned banned has gone on long enough, and I don’t want to give neveronsunday satisfication in causing inconvenience and more hard feelings here. and since the question has been answered as much as it’s going to be, I’m closing this thread.
PS - I’m taking over duties for this forum, temporarily, so no, it’s unlikely that there’s going to be another moderator coming along. And even if they do, they’re not going to say anything more than what’s been said already.
