Why was this University of Maryland student beaten by the police? (video)

Accident my ass LOL he knocked the crap outta that biker! I know he did it on purpose… Critical Mass are real real assholes. They annoy the hell outta law enforcement. They drive through a really busy area here in the ATL and just make miserable traffic even worse. Once i witnessed a child wet themselves because the mom was four blocks away but critical mass just slowed traffic to a standstill.

I agree. He was mistaken for someone not being filmed.

While this Maryland student’s assault appears unwarranted and a clear case of illegal activity on the part of the riot police, their presence there in the wake of a Duke-Maryland basketball game is warranted, based on several massive celebrations that morphed into really damaging and costly riots and vandalism sprees, like in 2001 (Duke win), 2002 (Maryland win) and 2006 (Maryland Women’s team win). Most of those arrested in those earlier incidents were not UM students, but police cruiser were attacked, police officers were hit with bottles. In this recent 2010 incident, 28 people were arrested, 23 of them UM students. Based on PWC Cops reputation, maybe half of those are legit.

Keep in mind PG county cops are the ones who shot & killed Mayor Cheye Calvo’s dogs (and restrained his mother-in-law) when Calvo’s front porch was used as a drug drop without his knowledge: http://reason.com/blog/2008/08/10/cheye-calvo-gets-it

From my experience as a news videographer in Washington DC and having been present at several of the aforementioned riots, it is reasonable for there to be a significant police presense and for force to be used if necessary, no doubt. I personally was seriously assaulted by a drunken college student in 2006, and I must thank the Prince Georges County Police officers who rushed the student and rescued me as I was trying to document the event.

However, I also recognize that as a department the Prince George’s County Police force has a reputation for brutality and corruption that is impressive in today’s world. A co-worker while working for another television station, Andrea McCarren was assaulted by a number of PG police officers and seriously injured, and the dash cam tapes mysteriously disappeared. A story about the incident is here.

Interestingly, the county is placing in service a new radio system that will be completly un-monitorable by scanners. Whereas there are many who would like to claim he public has no right to listen to the operation of public services such as police and fire, I am concerned that a county whose reputation is already so suspect will cloak it’s operations that much more from the scrutiny of the public. Furthermore, any clandestine, drug, swat or other secretive sting operations are already encrypted and are not currently monitorable by the public, so the claim that it’s to protect the personnel is fraudulant at best.

I hope this event goes far towards changing the atmosphere of brutality that eminates from the Eastern side of DC like an Icelandic volcano.

Today the breaking news is that the student’s attorney had subpoenaed surveillence tapes from the University of Maryland. According to an article at wtop.com, the following happened:

Soooo, the wife of an officer involved has ‘misplaced’ key video evidence.

Gotta love PG County.

Not guilty of assault <koffbullshitkoff>, guilty of falsifying complaint – he’s facing up to four years.

What a world we live in. Apparently from another thread just putting your arm around someone can be considered assault, but what Patric Pogan did isn’t.
[Ed Grimley]It’s making me mental[/Ed Grimley]

I didn’t know that there were any cops of the stripe that, you know, would give a shit about keeping up with a website like the SDMB. You know, the whole “intelligent person = fucking faggot” thing, and all.

I notice your reply was rife with typos. And you’re a cop Shocker!

I wish I could say I am more stunned by that verdict that I am.

3-to-1 says Pogan gets his old job back after he gets his slap on the wrist.

Is that like a regular shocker, but with handcuffs?

Attica! Attica!

Go to You-tube and scroll down to girl in pink shirt… cop gone bad in pg county. Officer Michael Greene, & his family members jumped me while trying to protect my son from being beaten by Mr. Greene. He charged me with assault on a police officer a month later, you see the pattern-- they try to charge you in-spite of their own actions. Just a big cover up. We never once provoked him… we even made several calls to 911 for help before everything was out of control. but when police finally came - they just took his side. I was told when i went to press charges against officer Greene and his family members at the court that i could not press charges on a police officer. the states attorney determined that the case will not be prosecuted what kind of mess is this.
But the charge of assault on police officer that he placed on me for no reason;— He actually placed it a month after the incident happened. So look who had to go to court “ME” . Internal Affairs has been investigating for a year but of course nothing has been done about his conduct, we had plenty of witnesses that witness his out of control behavior, it was like he was a THUG, NO professionalism at all… So check out this video clip on you tube.
