Why we'll win in Afghanistan

They’ve taken to cricket!

Story here.

Moving thread from IMHO to MPSIMS.

Win? Your links says that the beardees beat bearders :smack:

and a bonus point if a US poster unstands me

They may have won the battle, but we’re winning the war of culture.

I hope Australia plays them shortly so we can notch a few wins.

It’s only taken- what- 170-odd years?

Perhaps we can introduce the Americans to it as well.

Better yet, let’s introduce the Americans to Brockian Ultra-Cricket. They’d probably like that better.

You do realise that

i) something like half of all Afghans alive today have spent considerable time in Pakistan

and

ii) Cricket is Pakistans national game
Its ain’t cause of any British efforts.

From Wikipedia:

Which is a wordier version of what AK84 said.

ETA: The article linked in the OP also says, “Cricket became popular in Afghanistan during the 1990s as Afghan refugees returned home from camps in Pakistan.” So, no, we are not winning the war on culture.

It ain’t over until their is a McDonald’s and Starbucks in the main street over every town.

Nothing cures communism like a Big Mac . ( PJ O’Rourke)

Yeah, well they are Macs and KFC’s in Peshawar, and they were there in Swat.

Wait til we leave. They’ll play it using human heads.

Cool, but I thought they did that with polo.

Human heads are amazingly adaptable. They can be substituted for just about any ball in any sport. The two major exceptions are basketball, because the bounce too erratically; and water polo, because they sink.
