Like everyone’s computers, mine goes into power-saver mode after a while. Usually I can wake it up by moving the mouse. Recently however, it’s not waking up. It’s like when it freezes up when you’re working on it. I have to do a hard re-boot, which I don’t like to do.
I ran a defrag a couple of days ago when this happened. Whenever I try to run the thorough scandisc, it says that something is writing to the hard drive. I think the box says something like ‘Scandisc has tried to start ten times, but another program is writing to the hard drive. You might want to close all other programs. Cancel/Ignore’. I haven’t tried to run scandisc from the safe mode.
But that’s another problem. Right now, why won’t my computer wake up?
What operating system are you running? Is it possible that you have a scheduled task that’s getting jammed up when your computer goes into power saver mode?
You should definitely try to run SCANDISK in safe mode.
Do a CTRL+Alt+Del and see what is running, possibly something that shouldn’t ought to be. Some AV software will stop Scandisk as it is constantly monitoring disc activity itself.
If you have Spybot, run it in advanced mode and in the tools section use the ‘running processes’ tool to identify anything that task manager doesn’t know about, and the ‘System Startup’ tool to see what does what and stop it starting if you can live without it or it shouldn’t be there at all.
From first-hand experience, I can tell you that Norton Antivirus will cause you some hassles when trying to run SCANDISK. Even if you temporarily disable the live virus protection component, Norton will still interfere. A safe mode restart will usually get you around this problem.
Follow Daizy’s advice and provide us with a list of what’s running on your machine on bootup. Maybe there’s some spyware or malware that’s causing your PC to lock up when it attempts to leave hibernation mode.
The easiest thing to do is restart your computer in safe mode and run Disk Defragmenter from there. Hardly anything is running so there is nothing to interfere. Click restart and when the screen goes black hold down the CTRL key and a boot screen will come up and you can choose safe mode.
