Why would anyone live in Winnipeg?

This question arose over in GD and I thought it was a valid one.

Is there more to Winnipeg than mosquitoes the size of crows?

There must be.

Of course there is more to Winnipeg than big mosquitoes. I live there. All the rest of my arguments I posted in the “Vacation in Canada” thread.

There are blackflies. And boarded-up buildings in filthy neighbourhoods. There are abandoned streets after 6 P.M. Oh, and floods.

… and 'orrible winters.

Family there, jobs there, etc the same reasons people live in other towns such as [insert your least favorite city here].

And it’s easier to live there than to commute to there from Calgary or Montreal, both nice places to live.

Winters aren’t so bad now, thanks to global warming (Don’t tell kgriffey!).

Cheap housing, friendly people, and women who look like Poysyn. What more do you want?

And, Winnipeggers, per capita, consume more Slurpees than anyone else on Earth.

The real question is, why would anyone live in Edmonton? I mean, Calgary I can see, but Edmonton?

Winnipeg, at least certain parts of it, is a safe, boring, and cheap place to raise kids. (And I do mean kids. As soon as we were old enough to consider interesting uses for Dad’s power tools if cooped up for long enough, my family moved to Montreal.)

There is also Sargent Sundae. That’s about it. Oh, and it’s the largest city in the world with a gay mayor.

What a stupid original post. Why would anyone live in Los Angeles is a far more valid question, and answered for the same reason: some people like what it has to offer, and others don’t dislike it enough to move.

Now, if the purpose of the original post was to ask: “What is there in Winnipeg that is interesting or is fun to do?” then why not ASK it that way?

PIPELINER - Have I told you lately that I love you??

Regina’s the place to be.

Regina…Regina!!! Who would live in Regina, Saskatoon’s better. I mean even Weyburn (Where I’m from) is better then Regina, at least we have a hill and no geese.
Keith

They still have the NHL in Edmonton.

I grew up in Regina. It’s a nice place to be from. Saskatoon crushes it like a grape, though (as Odieman so correctly points out.)

Poysyn: I’ll be back home for Christmas for about 4 days. I have to try to work in visits to Soup Pierre, East India Company, and the Toad in the Hole, along with heavy family-based drinking. Maybe I’ll run into you somewhere in the Village.

DSYoungEsq - my reply to your reply…

What a stupid post. Why is “Why would anyone live in Los Angeles” a far more valid question than the one posed in the OP? Did L.A. somehow become the center of the universe while I wasn’t looking? I thought the center of the universe was Weyburn, Sask.

Was the purpose of the original post too obscure? We (Canucks) like to post that way to confuse non-Canucks and I see that the Canadians here understood the question perfectly.

Aside from the monstrous mosquitoes, black flies, and floods, Winnipeg seems like it would be a fun place to visit and it is populated with some fine Dopers.

I would make sure to stop by the real center of the universe so I could have a cold one with Odieman… we could talk shop…

And isn’t the fact that Edmonton has some of the coolest Dopers good enough reason to live here?

Seems like this will soon get moved to IMHO since we now know why one would want to live in Winnipeg.

I still don’t know why anyone would want to live in L.A. (That stands for Lacombe, Alberta).

It’s a good thing that none of those Vancouverites have invaded this thread yet… you know they will just go on about the fact that Van is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world, their weather is great, blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda… But can they drive when it snows??

We could have kept the Jets in Winnipeg, but we got so tired of them never making the playoffs that we dumped them onto Phoenix instead.

We were about to do the same with the Bombers until this season.

Actually, no offense, but this was a pretty stupid OP in the first place. Who asks a question that includes an insult to the people most likely to be able to answer it?
