That’s interesting. If Violet was rejected because ‘violet’ contained ‘viol’ (Fr for rape) why didn’t it reject GRAPE, with RAPE right in there?
Possibly it was seeing it as too close to Violent?
I don’t think you know how these words work. BTW, it was “viol”, French for “rape”.
Because “rape” is a word where if it was put with anything, it would not be considered offensive. By itself, it would be considered. However, “rapist” or “raper” would also be considered offensive even if the said words were put with other characters. Trust me. I know how these words work.
Perhaps you don’t know how the word “ass” works. It would be only be considered offensive if it was by itself, as well as if you put the letters b, c, h, k, r, or w in front of it. For example, Froslass would not be deemed offensive, but if you put any of the said letters in front of it, it will be deemed offensive. Oh, yeah. The word, jackass would also be considered offensive, along with fatass and assass.

Ooh…I’m betting Lunasa Prismriver does not want to get a 3DS.
…what? Hey, as long as we’re being thoroughly nonserious here, I’m going to get my gratuitous Touhou reference in!
I’ve run into this thing too: Every time I submitted something to GameFAQs that had the word “fistful” in it, I was informed that it would be placed under review because the website thought it saw…yep…“STFU”. (For the record, I never use that, for the same reason I don’t kick hornets’ nests.) Seriously, Microsoft Word has a “match whole word” option, for ages, I don’t see what’s so hard about it.
Or, for that matter, the game TELLING YOU why the word was not allowed. “In game character with that name” sounds totally plausible to me.
The problem is that, if you only look for the whole word, people will get around the filter by using “xSTFU” instead of “STFU.” So you block names that have the word you want to ban incorporated into it, which leads to banning legitimate words that happen to have a letter combination in them that looks like a bad word. You can get around that by coding in explicit exceptions: words with “rape” in them are blocked, unless they’re preceded by a “g,” for example. But you have to do every individual word by hand, and it’s inevitable that you’re going to miss some. Obviously, whoever coded this didn’t consider “Violet” when he put “viol” on this list, so there’s not an exception for that word in the game.
As for why “viol” is on the list in the first place, I assume it has something to do with Canada.
Also, speaking from personal experience working in videogames geared to very young children (I used to do QA for the Leapster handheld) nobody on the production side gives a shit about the profanity filters. They’re put there to satisfy the legal department, but nobody in development wants to waste any time on them. The nature of human expression means the entire attempt is futile. When we’d do Disney licenses, they’d give us a five page document of swears that the players weren’t allowed to use as screen names. Each new title, the list would get a little bit longer, as some new illicit combination of letters was discovered. The irony was, our testing procedure for this was basically, “Does “shit” work? No. “Fuck?” No. “Cock?” No. Alright, we’re good.”
Brief hijack: years back, I used to do puzzle construction.
The software I used to create word search puzzles had all kinds of odd restrictions. In a game about 60s rock, it wouldn’t let me use TRAFFIC, because… it contains the word FART backwards!
It wouldn’t let me do CONSTITUTION for a July 4th puzzle, because… it contained TIT.
On the other hand, it let me use CLASSROOM even though it contained ASS.
You never know what the original programmers thought were sensitive words, or why some naughty words are banned and others slide by.
I used to be active on the forum RLLMUK, an offshoot from the Edge forum (based around the Edge videogames magazine). I remember one guy on their being banned from Xbox Live due to his username. His actual name was Nigel and he went by Bignige - Big Nige. Unfortunately somebody read it as “Big Nigger” and made a complaint.
The company I work for has a chat functionality. We’re a Swedish company, but with an international user base. We’ve blocked all use of the word “sex”, which is unfortunate as it is the Swedish word for “six”. Considering our target market it is pretty much something you just have to do.
There was a story on Cracked.com about a guy who got auto-banned from the Xbox Live Arcade because he’d listed his location as Fort Gay, West Virginia.
So he called Microsoft to complain, and the operators basically told him to fuck off with his stupid, juvenile jokes. Adamantly refused to believe there was such a place. It took an official letter from the *mayor *of Fort Gay, plus some media snickering, before the guys at Microsoft realized they might have picked up a map or something :).
That seems odd to me, as I’ve never once encountered a place where the word “sex” was forbidden. I’d also be very surprised if that word is actually used by those who wish to use your chat functionality to solicit cybersex.
In the late 90’s there was a Japanese journeyman racing driver in the CART open wheel series by the name of Hiro Matsushita. I remember the racing message board I used to visit at the time had some sort of automatic censoring filter and Hiro’s last name was always rendered as Matsu****a.
The fact that he was a lousy driver to begin with made the mistaken censoring all the more funny.
He wined too much, I think…
I stepped in to make a joke about violets in gaming and saw that I got it done in post #5. At least I’m consistent.
Well, where do you keep your jars? :dubious:
Um, what? Trust me, I know a LOT of words offensive to the 3DS, as well as how they work, but overall, what are u even saying, mah boi?
Maybe they should have changed the name of the city to Fort Homosexual.
I ran into that problem on the WoW forums when I was complaining that I had to turn off cloak display on my draenei characters because the cloaks would not drape properly over the tails.
Words I know that would be offensive to the 3DS are cunt, poop, feces, haxor, vomit, barf, fart, homo, dyke, jigaboo, spic, injun, kraut, wetback, Hitler, Nazi, suicide, kill, murder, torture, jackass, fatass, assass, kurwa, vulva, dupa, cipa, dziwka, suka, semen, sperm, jizz, jism, knob, etc…
