Why you see eagles over New England garages

Growing up in 70’s in the Town of Pelham, New York, I was told a little known folklore of why you see eagles mounted on the gables of a New England garages: A Yankee homeowner would celebrate paying off the last of their mortgage and gaining their “freedom” from the death grips of the bank by proudly mounting an eagle over the garage for all to see. I retold this story recently to some friends on an architecture walking tour in San Francisco–a few of them didn’t believe me. Can anyone set the record straight.
