Why you should watch The Colbert Report

That took balls the size of grapefruits. The biggest compliment was that the next year the same event was emceed by comedian Rich “Damn, he’s still alive and performing?” Little, best known for having done Jimmy Carter and Johnny Carson and Ronald Reagan and George Burns impressions in the 1970s when they were relevant. At the 2007 event he did… uh… Jimmy Carter and Johnny Carson and Ronald Reagan and George Burns impressions; I was embarassed for him even if he wasn’t embarassed himself. (Dude- you can at least add in Al Gore or Bill Clinton to get with the 90s.)

It boosted his awareness and popularity with his target demographic by perhaps 200% overnight. I’m not saying his ego didn’t come into it, but it could also have been a calculated career move. I’ll credit him only with the intelligence to realize that this isn’t the 1940s and that the president no longer has any say in who gets to be popular.

Or did you think there was any chance that he would be dragged out and shot in the street? Well the red team was in power then so I guess you think so.

He was in non physical danger, no, but it was still pretty ballsy, and a real career risk if it had backfired.

Not that any of this matters since sniffing that it didn’t take “courage” for Colbert to take the Palin shot doesn’t make the shot any less funny or deserved. It’s just irrelevant carping.

While the number 200 might have more truthiness, the actual number is 37.

Fact remains that he did that act in front of a potentially hostile audience. He made fun of Bush in front of Bush. As Lewis Black would say, he was so close Colbert could pet him.

No, there’s no real physical danger to Colbert or even political danger, but even Lewis Black pussied out and did a sanitized act when he was asked to do the Congressional Correspondent’s Dinner and was told Bush would be attending. Most people talk big in front of their own audiences, but clam up when the person they’re making fun of is in the same room.

Plus, he is a talk show host. His show partly depends on access to influential people, which can be jeopardized by risky moves like that. It could certainly have backfired horribly for him.

Yep, that’s exactly how I thought. Why, I still remember the Bush kill squads roaming my neighborhood, breaking down doors and killing anyone who dared to disparage The Great Leader. What Colbert did was a shining beacon to those of us in the resistance and led to the 2008 coup that put Obama into power.

Lucky for me they only broke down even numbered doors in my neighborhood and my house is an odd number.

Well, DUH!

New to hangin’ with your Catholic brethren, eh? Dude, we put the “Pee on the sacristy steps” in PARTY. And it wasn’t a generational thing because you were likely as not to find your dad writing his name on the steps to the narthex.

Your Bush Squads could count? Mine just just looked around nervously and then attacked a nearby library.
