what does that mean? that i would not need shades if i am in full ninja garb?
I think they’re saying it’s similar in function to the black “greasepaint” stuff that some football players put under their eyes, supposedly to cut the glare of the sun.
but how? i suppose if your snout is visible, it will be helpful to have it less reflective, even though i wouldn’t characterise fur as shiny. paint under a human’s eyes, on the other hand, seems like it wouldn’t work.
Yes, I have never understood that. Wouldn’t greasepaint, even of a dark color, reflect even more glare than plain skin? And why are American Football players the only people who seem to have this issue? Soccer and rugby players don’t seem to have a problem with glare, and what about baseball (and cricket) fielders (and batters) who have to accurately make out a much smaller, faster moving ball, often at greater distance, and often against a bright sky. Why don’t they have an even greater need of glare protection than footballers?
I think it is really just warpaint.
A number of species of falcon also have an analogous adaptation (so-called falcon “sideburns”)…
Is there any reason it can’t be both?
I think njtt already gave the reasons why he feels its effectiveness at reducing glare is questionable, and therefore why it can’t be both. The wiki article mentions some studies were done, but results inconclusive at best.
