I’ve never felt so accepted in all my life. These people looked deep within my soul and assigned me a number based on the number of posts I’ve made. <sniff>
It’s the little things that matter. Congrats!
What’s your user name there? I searched for “piper” and only got one hit and it wasn’t Northern Piper. Or did the list get updated and you got bumped?
I’ve wondered before how many Dopers were also wiki editors. I suspect it’s quite a few.
You mean to tell me there isn’t a wikipedia page devoted to that??
I only edited one article, so I don’t think I’ll be cracking any barriers soon.
Well, but if you go all anal compulsive and make 9000 edits to one article …
Mr Serjeant Buzfuz
(Points if you get the reference without looking it up on Wikipedia. )
I mostly fix up images and grammar and markup mistakes. It’s feel kinda like coloring–a somewhat mind numbing but relaxing activity.
I gave up direct editing, as having to argued to defend everything I did was just too stressful. Though I did translate half an article from another Wiki.
Does that mean we get to call you the Honourary Mr Serjeant Buzfuz?
Well, since the last Serjeant died almost a century ago, I guess it must be honourary!
I edited one once and my contribution was deleted within seconds.
As an occasional Wikipedia editor, I am simply in awe, Northern Piper. Good on ya!
Thanks!
I’m currently working on a major project. When it’s up, I’ll post links.
Congratulations!
I’m mostly a WikiGnome myself, though lately I’ve been translating articles from Spanish Wikipedia into English. It’s pretty easy - Google does most of the work, but requires a fair bit of cleaning up.
Seems I’ve only edited around 500 times, and many of those are constant adjustments trying to fix formatting errors. I wouldn’t hit the top half-million editors.
Finished my project and just posted the links in a new thread: Ask the guy who wikified the electoral history of the Canadian Prime Ministers!
I used to do it, but nowadays if you edit wikipedia someone just comes along and deletes everything. So I don’t even bother anymore.
I think it really depends on the topics you’re editing. I’ve heard that from other people, but I’ve not experienced it myself.
It is topic-specific, IME, but the phenomenon Wesley Clark reported is very much alive and well. And why I don’t really bother with wiki-editing any more either.
Once you run into an aggressive and territorial editor, you understand just what “anyone” really means in the motto “The Free Encyclopedia Anyone Can Edit”. (It means “not you”)
The other thing I used to do for fun was vandal-whacking, but that’s just a thankless and never-ending chore.
