Wilco fans, guide my exploration!

100%, although I think it’s as good as anything pre-YHF.

I was introduced to Wilco by this board after YHF. I thought I was late to the game, but that’s almost 20 years ago and they’ve done a lot of great stuff since then.

As for the OP I would add another vote for Being There and a first vote for Wilco (the album).

Yes, those are very fun albums. I’d been listening to lots of Uncle Tupelo, who I didn’t hear about until long after they broke up, and then Mermaid Avenue came out, and went into heavy rotation with me, and it still took me a year or so to realize I should be listening to Wilco.

So, if you like the early Wilco stuff, listen to some Uncle Tupelo, and then try the other branch that came from that band and listen to some Son Volt.

As mentioned, if you like this genre, the Jayhawks are a great one to add to your list. The 90s were a fun time for alt country.

Thirded or fourthed. Also, with bonus Natalie Merchant.

As long as you’re exploring, after you’ve spent some time with YHF, you might want to watch this documentary about its making:

trailer

The trailer is a tiny bit misleading, but it’s a good documentary.

Yes, no question about that for sure. Here’s a great example so everyone can play along at home.

A new(ish) article in the New York Times that talks about the new YHF box set, and last year’s documentary about Jay Bennett, one of the band members during the recording of YHF.

Sorry if it’s paywalled, I don’t have a subscription to provide a guest link. The whole article can pretty much be summarized as: it’s 20 years later and we’re still talking about this.

Talking about this album or about Jay Bennett? I was pretty caught up in the whole Bennett thing while it happened, but now I really don’t wanna hear anymore about it. But I’ll continue talking about the album any time.

Don’t skip A Ghost is Born. Wonderful dissonance, there.

If you like “Good”, or “Excellent”, then…

Uh, Jayhawks.

nugs.net is streaming Wilco’s shows tonight and tomorrow night (10/4 and 10/5) from the Civic Theater in New Orleans. It’s free for subscribers–I was one already, but I think you can sign up for a free trial.

I get to see Jeff Tweedy do a solo show in a couple of weeks in the same venue where I saw them for the very first time on the AM tour (with the Jayhawks, in fact).

Oh, the Jayhawks are awesome. I managed to see both Wilco and the Jayhawks at diofferent times before they got super popular. and they were playing in small 500-1000 seat clubs. It was awesome.

“Hollywood Town Hall”, “Tomorrow the Green Grass” and “Rainy Day Music” are essential Jayhawks albums. If you like Wilco, I predict you’ll like The Jayhawks just as much.

I also have a very soft spot for “Sound Of Lies”. It’s much more power pop than alt-country, but what great power pop they offered with this one!

100% true. Gives me goosebumps.

Yep, I have goosebumps now!

Thanks again, friends.

I listened to the first Mermaid Ave. album in the car today–and it was really good! I have a lot more homework to work on, however…

I personally think the second one is a stronger album overall, but on the other hand the first one has “California Stars” and “Hesitating Beauty” which are just outstanding.
