Wild Goose Chase

I need a bunch of terms that mean that someone has been sent down the wrong track. Equally, anything that is similar to ‘close, but no cigar’… can anyone help?

Wild goose chases, eh? How about…

Snipe hunt
Barking up the wrong tree
That dog don’t hunt
Red herring

peeing in the wind

Being sent on a “sleeveless errand” is an old-fashioned phrase for this.

Led down the primrose path.

Pissing up a rope.

Stepping on his own dick.

Note: These two cannot be done at the same time.

Sent down the wrong track. Derailed and sidetracked.

Surely this means stubbornly doing something doomed to fail, rather than being mislead?

Wild goose chase = being sent on a fool’s errand

I was thinking along the lines of futility.

all very useful, thanks. but any 'close but no cigar’isms… and what does this mean anyway? is it the fact that you are rewarded with a cigar if you succeed, like making babies??

Old carnival stuff. They used to award them as prizes.

Being given a bum steer.

Sent to the wrong bus-stop.

White-washing coal.

Looking in the wrong forum.

Off to IMHO.
