A friend of mine recently bought a digital camera; unfortunately she doesn’t own a working computer! I was thinking of getting her a photo printer for Christmas, specifically the HP Photosmart 8450. This printer has memory card slots and a small LCD, and allows you to print photos directly from the memory card. Can she use this printer without a computer attached? I can use my laptop to set it up; will it run on its own after that?
Yes it will print without a PC.
Check this out.
Yes; a number of photo printers and all-in-one devices will print in standalone mode (‘stand alone’ is the key phrase to be looking for when you’re shopping around) - I believe some of the available devices even offer rudimentary cropping, colour/brightness/contrast adjustment, captioning etc, but nothing like the breadth of stuff you can do with an image editing suite.
We bought my father-in-law one in August, and set it up and used it in the cabin we’d rented, miles and miles from his computer. With some of them, you don’t even need to “set it up” with a computer/laptop first.
The specific question’s been answered, but in general any printer with a card reader can print without a computer.
People with digital cameras but no computer may also find this device interesting/useful - you can transfer the contents of your memory card directly onto CDR - which would seem to be a better idea than simply keeping a hard copy and wiping the memory media.
