Is the question “would the animals ever copulate” or “could they produce offspring”?
If the former, I suppose it could happen. I’ve seen a horny (heh) sheep try to mount a cow. Heck, I’ve seen dogs humping people’s legs. I haven’t seen any animals going after Colibri’s dustmop, but I’d believe him if he said it happened.
If the latter, no. They’re too genetically different to produce offspring.
I bet they could produce offspring; why, I saw a documentary once where some boys utilized the romantic power of Elton John to successfully mate a male elephant with a female pig.
Didn’t he rewrite a version of Candle In The Wind specially for the purpose? I’d be surprised if not.
Ooh, ooh, I’ve got an elephant joke! I suppose it could work with any animal, but I’ve always heard it as an elephant.
How do you trap an elephant in a hole?
Step 1: Dig a hole big enough to contain the elephant.
Step 2: Get a whole bunch of wood and throw it in the hole. Set it on fire and let it burn down until it’s all in ashes.
Step 3: Get a can of peas or a bag of frozen peas, and arrange them in a circle all around the edge of the hole.
Step 4: Call the elephant. Make sure he’s standing at the very edge of the hole.
Step 5: Then, when the elephant comes to take a pea, sneak up behind him and kick him in the ash-hole.
I suppose it could also have its purposes for preventing elephant-rhino rape or sexual harassment.
I read an article once about the local zoo trying to get rhinos to mate… apparently they’re not terribly competent… Romeo went for the rib and the ear before the zoo handlers had to steer him down the right alley. If they’re that clueless, I could see rhinos attempting to mate with elephants under the right circumstances, just out of sheer ignorance.
