Will anyone ever come out with a new candy bar again?

Oh DITTO!

Keep the sickly sweet milk chocolate and bring on the dark, dark, lovely dark REAL chocolate.

Couldn’t have said it better! We keep 4 around the house for the “munchies”. I agree, I think it’s something with the pretzels, perfect mix of sweet and salty, chewy and crunchy. It’s beautiful!
Oooh, I tried a Dark Chocolate Twix bar today. Oh yum. Not as good as the Take 5, but still very good. Worth trying!

For those that live where Mountain Bars are available, they have just come out with a mint version to go with the regular, cherry, and peanut butter versions. It might be time for a trip to the Brown and Haley seconds store. Almond Roca and Mountain Bars, $1 a pound.

Y’know what’re hard to find but are freakin’ CRACK in candy bar form?

Zagnuts. ( http://www.oldtimecandy.com/zagnut.htm )

Mmmm! Take the center of a Butterfinger, but don’t make it so super-concentrated (a more gentle flavor, if you will) and cover it with toasted coconut. Delicious. The perfect candy bar for when you’re not in a chocolate mood, but still like the standard chocolate accoutrements.

I’ve never had a Zagnut, but it sounds like a Chick-O-Stick

And yes, they’re yummy!

OK, television inspired buildup. I should have known, shouldn’t I? As I mentioned, I’m a big fan of those peanut butter cups but Hershey chocolate didn’t do a lot for me. I was disappointed in Oreos when I finally got to try them as well.

For those of you who like Zagnut, come to Lawrence. They’re 4 for $1 at my local grocery.

I remember Lindt. I lived in Switzerland for a while, and I was renting a room from a couple where the man worked for the supermarket that sells Lindt (Migros). As a gesture of pure good will they maintained in my room a bowl of those little mini bars of various Lindt chocolates. The bowl never was empty because they they just kept refilling it. I guess they got it for free. Anyway, you gotta wonder why the Queen of England eats Cadbury (if she does, in fact).

But if you want to like Hershey’s again, Little Bird, try this: I’d just started working a new job in Colombia and found myself broke two weeks before my first paycheck. I tried to figure out what would be the cheapest source of the most calories to get by. I settled on Carlos V chocolate bars–sold throughout Latin America, and surely the worst chocolate you will ever taste. It will make Hershey’s seem like heaven.

Regarding OP, why invent new candy bars, when some of the classics are disappering. I’m speaking of the legendary Idaho Spud–a candy bar/potato. We used to buy them when I was a kid, but I don’t see them around today. We never ate them; we just thought they were funny.

That’s brilliant, Excalibre! Extreme mediocrity. It could even be a kind of torture.

Anyone ever have Squirrel Nut Zippers? The swing band took their name from that very old-fashioned candy. It is super-dense and sticky, kind of peanut-buttery with honey or nougat or something. Kind of like a cross between a caramel, a Bit-O-Honey (I miss those too), and something with nuts.

The Idaho Candy Company is still in business and making Idaho Spud bars. I don’t really care for them, but if you have a craving, my e-mail is in my profile. E-mail me and I’ll send you a couple.

They stopped making Bit-O-Honey? The only time I ever ran into these was on Halloween.

What a distinction! One of the top hundred in the Northwest? I would hate to eat a candy bar that did NOT make that list.

Mmm, those things are a drug. I don’t even like peanut butter. I think my love is based on that combination of salty and sweet - such a contrast. They’re wonderful . . .

I did a bit of research on this for biochem back in college. Unfortunately I’m at work so I don’t have all my old cites so no exact figures here, but dark chocolate is quite packed with antioxidants. More so than green tea, in fact. It’s been found to help lower LDL levels in blood. It also contains a chemical similar to THC that activates the same parts of the brain, albeit in a much smaller way. The part about the high fat and sugary is true, though. The study that tested the effects on cholesterol recommended something like a bar a month or so. Ha! Like anybody has that kind of self-control. Besides, who eats chocolate as a health food?

I went past the shop which sells the peanut butter cups today. I was strong; I didn’t succumb. Tomorrow, however, is another day.
