Quick question: Will the newer athlon motherboards (kt333, kt400, nforce2) support future athlon cores like the barton?
I’m wondering because I plan on getting one of these boards with a low end athlon CPU, hoping that I can just plop in a fast CPU down the road and not have to worry about upgrading the motherboard.
I know, for example, the gigabyte ga-7axp has a dipswitch for 100/133/166 FSB settings - is that there to support future 166 mhz athlon cores? Will the barton be 166?
From what I have gathered, nobody knows for sure yet, but people smarter than me have guessed that the nForce2 and the kt400 WILL be able to run Barton’s and the KT333 will probably not be able to. Nothing official has been said by AMD,Via or Nvidia one way or the other yet AFAIK.
I imagine that these new mobos can support the Barton, which is the end of the line anyway - supposedly.
In the past it’s always been dicey. It may support the higher speed, it may support the features but history has shown us that it won’t be fully compatable.
