Will I ever like beer?

I probably started liking beer when I was 16. I know I wasn’t keen the first couple of times, but that was probably down to drinking a cheap, crappy beer like Budweiser.

As a beer drinker, I’m of the opinion that all the mass-marketed American beers aren’t worth drinking even when free. To be honest though, that goes for most mass-marketed beers.

You said that you expected beer to be thick, creamy and sweet, right? If you can find it there look out for Belgium’s Hoegaarden, a white wheat beer. I think it has a slightly sweet lemon flavour and is definitely thick and creamy. I think there are some raspberry beers out there too, although I’ve never tried one yet.

I know it’s cheaper, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t make you any less of a man or anything like that to not drink beer. Some things in life you just can’t develop a taste for. For example, I will never understand my parents’ fixation with Campari. I swear that’s what evil tastes like.

I always tell people who don’t like beer, but want to like beer, to find a lambic (and it has to be from Belgium, otherwise it’s fake). There are flavoured lambics (currant, peach, etc.) and unflavoured (gueuze).

Then it becomes a matter of finding out what you like. If you dislike coffee gentle, much like I do, than any beer with an excess of hops is going to be disgustingly bitter. Since most lagers-- especially pilsners-- are heavy on the hops, you probably want to steer towards ales.
