50 years ago in Tulsa OK, they burried a brand new car.
Will it turn over?
I’m going to say, yes.

Heh, I was just reading this. Judging from the tailfin and soggy container, I’m gonna venture a “no.”
I’m going to guess that time and moisture took too much of a toll, but DAMN! that’s a fascinating story!
Depends. Did they drain the gasoline out prior to the burial?
I get the sense they did since it states the 10 gallons of leaded was one of the “artifacts buried along with the car”.
A vote “no”. Varnished engine maybe? if it sat in water for 50 years the block might be rusted away.
And a big shout out to the voice in my head that says, “Oh Belvedere! Come here boy!”.
(and 10 points to someone who can place that quote)
Bugs bunny cartoon?
(The old guy calling his dog)
Dang - yeah - right. No episode name, though.
I can imagine them burying it 50 years ago thinking “by the time they unearth this in 2007 there probably won’t even be any cars or roads. Everyone will have a flying car by then. And they’ll run on hydrogen.”
Sad how wrong they were.
This reminds me of Sandra West, who died at the age of 37 and was buried in her baby-blue 1964 Ferrari 250GT (one source says it was a 330 America) in 1977 after she died of a drug overdose…
I love how they’re determining who gets the car:
Of course, the odds aren’t all that great that the winner is still alive, let alone living in the area.
If the winner is dead then his/her heirs would get the prize (how that would actually work out is a question for a probate lawyer). So did anyone else immediately think of Back to the Future III when they heard about his?
I’m just wondering how many days or weeks of work Boyd Coddington will have to put into this thing.
Looks like they slathered it all with Cosmoline, so the chrome is probably OK, and any steel that got coated with the stuff is also probably OK. Did they also coat the engine and frame? OTOH, I have no idea what 50 years under Cosmoline will do to paint - the stuff is usually applied to protect bare metal.
Was there a singing frog in the vault as well?
If you want to find video clips, the TV stations in Tulsa are KTUL, KJRH, KOTV and KOKI (www.fox23.com) . I’m thinking that it’s not going to start right up. ![]()
What was that about a Plymouth Furry?
Well, the car had a good lead coat paint job (:p), so it might be okay. I know that I’ve got some of my tools coated with it, and the paint’s still fine.
They thought exactly that, which is why they also buried ten gallons of leaded gasoline.
Bit of a side note here, but what the heck is “Cosmoline”?
Regards, and apologies for the semi hi jack…

Sadly, she is an utter wreck.
The upholstery is gone, the doors won’t open, the keys are apparently rusted into the ignition, and it’s believed that the vault was completely filled with water at least once during the past 50 years. Oddly enough, the tires hold air.
What is believed to be the woman’s purse is pretty much unidentifiable, and they’ve not found the microfilm with the contest entries yet.
