Bad analogy. We still have the use of (most of) the message board. This is more like having the radio go out in your car. I don’t think Geico pays squat for that.
It’s not perfect, sure, because for the analogy to work, you’d need to have a free car (posting), with a radio that you’re paying for (searching). Still, I don’t see how anything other than day-for-day compensation can be fair.
Eh, still a bad analogy. The car radio isn’t anywhere near as vital as the Search is to many members, including me. It’s a little closer to having an axle about to go - you can limp around local okay, with your fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong, but you can’t take it on the highway or show it off for your friends.
Why is anyone paying any attention to QED? I don’t know what he’s getting out of the deal other than what he might think he’ll gain via his obsequiousness.
Do the people that run this board ever go anyplace else? Don’t they visit Fark or /. or Metafilter or any of the other 400 places that rank above this on boardfilter? If they do visit those places, do they pay attention to the membership quals between there and here?
I paid up so I could search and now I can’t. I want that function back. If the board can’t give me that function I want to be compensated.

The fact of the matter is that “pay to post” is a misnomer. Anyone can post, paid or unpaid. I paid up so I can search. You’re not even a moderator, let alone an admin, and can’t do anything to ameliorate my complaint. I don’t understand why you typed that at me other than in a feeble attempt to assert the “appeal to authority” fallacy.
[after preview] I realize this is not the Pit. I’m not angry (at least, I wasn’t before TubaDiva’s post, and I defintitely wasn’t before QED’s post); I’m frustrated. I paid up so I could search. Now I can’t. QED is trying to compare this to car insurance. This is a false analogy. If I have insurance and drive my car into a tree, my insurance company will pay up - that’s why I pay them. I don’t HAVE to pay you to post; I pay you to be able to search.

Ok, then you’re going to have to school me in the fine points between going after an argument and going after a person. “Are you four years old?” is personal and I’ll cop to it; how can I reword that to say “Your argument makes you appear to be four years old.” without incurring administrative wrath?

I don’t want compensation. Heck, you can bill me extra. Just fix things. Thank you for the energy you put into it, yadda yadda, but fix things. We want all our legacy posts back. We want a responsive server that does not time out. We want search returned, preferably without the long wait between searches.
Fix things. Never mind paying us back for what we paid for. Charge us as need be for making this place work, then make it work.
But you chose to carry on with a bad analogy, didn’t you? The percentage of time one uses posting compared to searching (alluded to in post #7) is a red herring. Anyone can read; anyone can post. I pay so I can search. Searching is a “feature”. I paid for that. I want my money’s worth.
Let me give you a GOOD analogy. I pay my telephone company to call OUT. It’s very nice of them to allow me to get calls IN but, really, I pay them so I can call OUT. It’s really nice of them to let me call 911. I don’t do it very often - much less than the number of times I call out AND the number of times people call in put together - but they still do allow me to call 911, even though I pay them very little in order for them to allow me to do that. This place, though - that 911 search is a FEATURE and why I chose to pay up.
Anyone can read, true. But, you cannot post unless you pay (30-day Guest trial period excepted).

Ongoing speculation isn’t helping the business model, assuming there is one. Every day that the complaints go unanswered only serves to foster further resentment regarding how we’re being treated.
