Will SD Add a "Like" Button?

It’d be soooo convenient if SDopers could simply “like” someone’s post rather than clog up the SD server with all kinds of superfluous posts that equate to a simple “like”! (Or, does Zuckerboogie hold the patent on the “Like” button?)

^like. +1.

Didn’t there used to be a “like” function, back in the day?

Isn’t going to happen:

No, we never had one, and I don’t see it ever happening around here.

Death first.

Like, no?

A one-click popularity contest … sounds intriguing.

It wouldn’t save anything, people that click like would then just post stuff like “hey I just liked your post”

It would keep me from having to come up with anything worthwhile to say while I’m randomly clicking things on the Internet.
Like I’ve ever had anything worthwhile to say.

We could really cut down on superfluous posting by having just the OP, to which all others could click either a ‘like’ or an ‘unlike’ button. Of course we’d all be bored out of our brains but the hamsters could have a well-deserved rest.

The latter is a troll magnet. I think we attract enough trolls as is.

I see this come up from time to time, and I am confused by it. Isn’t the point of a message board to talk about things? Installing a “like” button would seem to cut down on the talking part. Why respond to a post when you can just click “like” and move on? It seems to be antithetical to the purpose of a message board.

OK fine. I’m not even on facebook, I hate that “be BFFs with strangers” shit.

Having read the threads linked above, I now see the light. “Like” button a very bad idea.
The only utility I was thinking of was a quick off-board way to thank someone rather than posting a “hey thanks” post that everyone will ignore anyhow, or tht looks like you’re bumping your own post for shits and giggles.
Apparently I am naive.

I wasn’t advocating such a button. I mustn’t have made myself clear.

That was just a general comment.

“Like” buttons, like Facebook itself, is for fools to pretend to have a dialog with one another.

Let’s not take SDMB anywhere near there. Ever.

We could do one better than Facebook and also add a “Dislike” button. I can think of many times I would have liked to click on that.

While I think rep, with well handled rules (they do exist!) could be worthwhile, like buttons are just too hairy in a messageboard setting.

And here’s an example why:
