Will shrimp hurt my dog?

I burnt my shrimp. My dog doesn’t seem to care. She has had bits and pieces of shrimp before, but never a bunch.

I hate to just throw it out, but I don’t want to endanger the dog.

How much is ‘a bunch’? Could you give her part today and part tomorrow? My dogs eat shrimp anytime I have it and I have never had a problem with it.

A mantis shrimp might.

Otherwise, I do not know of any reason that eating shrimp might harm a dog. Although there are certain peculiar exceptions, notably grapes and chocolate,* generally speaking, dogs (being scavengers) have cast iron stomachs, and can handle anything a human can, and then some . . . and then some more.

*And, as our dog discovered to her cost, green chalk. Apparently it is the pigment, also found in green crayons. It is non-toxic to humans (so they can and do mark the box “non toxic”), but toxic to dogs. (Don’t worry, she got over it after getting her stomach pumped by the emergency vet.)

A lb of shrimp was fried up. It must weigh much less now.

If a lot of them gang up on him, they could probably take him. You should get a Blue Whale to protect him from the shrimp.

Serious answer: offhand googling indicates the key issue is removing the shells first, which are sharp.

I always give my dogs shrimp tails when we eat them. Seems to cause no problems.

You could put them in the freezer and parcel them out a few at a time as special treats.

Other idea: go fishing, use the shrimp as bait. Take the dog with you.

Well, so far she seems OK. Although she now seems to think it is OK to come and stare at me for more food…

Careful, once a dog gets some human food it’ll be ruined for dog food

I had a dog that we used to feed dog food to, but get acclimated to human food when my dad started feeding him leftovers and other junk. After that, it would just stare at the dog food and not eat it until it was really really hungry. After trying the dog food, I can understand. Dog food smells good but has like no taste, no salt. It’s a horrible meal. Meanwhile, us humans put so much junk in our food that it’s no wonder dogs like it better than the normal food they’re supposed to eat

Dogs don’t have tastes buds as sensitive as ours, even their treats are very bland in comparison. It’s the smell they care about more. Beggin’ Strips smell fantastic but they don’t remotely taste like bacon.

I feed my dog leftovers and cheese and have to give him a twice daily pill with food, which I mix into a raw egg. He has also had shrimp. He does seem to wait until later in the day and nibbles a little dog food here and there, but it doesn’t seem to be because I haven’t given him some human food first.

There is a list of human food that is poisonous to dogs on the net in various places. Onions and grapes are on it.

Not true.

I have 4 dogs at this time, and there has never been a day in my 50 years that I have had less than 2 dogs. They are fed a good quality kibble mixed with a bit of canned, and are regularly given treats of leftover people food. My dogs know that when I feed them, it is left down for X amount of minutes and if it is not eaten, it is taken up and they doin’t get fed again till next meal.

I have no trouble with them cleaning their pans, even when they know there is people food to be had.
