Will stating I'm in a car pool impact my car insurance rates?

Hi everyone… long time listener, first time caller here.

Over the weekend, I purchased a Toyota Prius and I went online to my insurance company to add the vehicle (including liability and collision) to my insurance, and one of the questions they asked was “Will this vehicle be used in a car pool?”

Well, it will. But should I check that box? How does that impact insurance rates, if at all? And, if I don’t check that box, what are the implications since I do in fact participate in a car pool?

I’m in Pennsylvania, if that matters. I know insurance laws vary from state to state.

Any ideas?

I’ve read that it can reduce your insurance costs - because you’re not driving as many miles in a year, so less likely to have an accident.

None of these are the original place I read that (can’t find it now), but they’re links that indicate it can:

But I am not an insurance agent, much less yours, and ymmv.

What do they mean by a car pool? Are they asking if there will be multiple drivers not related to you? Or are they asking if you will be using the car to drive others to work on a reciprocal basis? The former might well put the rates up.

Ring them and find out.
