I’m trying to find any information on the New York area, specifically Manhattan (where I live) and Montauk (eastern tip of Long Island, where I go to the beach on the weekends in the summer). I see a few maps (like this one ) which seem to indicate that I’ll be safe but does anyone have definitive proof one way or another?
I’m scared that I’ll rent a weekend beach place out in Montauk only to be swarmed over by these nasty looking critters!
USA Today seems to be trying to make “Hornets from Hell II” out of this. The map you linked to really makes it seem unlikely Brood X will be up your way; the records aren’t as well-established for PA and NJ and NY/LI is just beyond the edge of that anyway. An article in the Washington Post “Express” (a free daily digest) says they’ll be in MD and DC for sure, and also parts of PA, KY, TN, IN, and OH.
My two favorite bits from the article:
An excellent life philosophy if I ever heard one. And this:
My family in Northern New Jersey says that they can’t ever remember the 17-year Cicadas being there That doesn’t speak for the areas you’re mentioning, but I don’t think you’ll be seeing them in NYC or the coastal area.
Cicadas are great fun to play with. When my dad and his brothers were young’ins, they used to gather dozens of them in a paper bag and dump them over the heads of mannequins in departments stores. The thought of these big black creatures with red eyes squirming throughout a mannequin’s hair and clothes with that vapid mannequin stare makes me laugh.
