Will the Microcosm ever be beautiful?

Quantum Mechanics, the theoretical Higgs Field, Super String Theory and its 10 or 11 dimensions, all the damn math, all the unexpected particles and wave functions and non-zero vacuums, etc.

Sure, experimental evidence has brought all this stuff to our awareness, but doesn’t it feel like we’re missing something? Something big. Something that’s going to tie it all together and make it simple and beautiful.

I’m just a fan of physics, I don’t understand anything more than the layman interpretations of it all. But it seems like there’s something grand out there that we can’t see yet. Yes, this is what keeps me awake at night. Just wondering what actual, real-live physicists think about it.

Well, they are all looking for the Grand Unified Theory.

Yehhh, I realize that. But even the big contenders like M-Theory lack a certain something that can be found in the macrocosm. I’m only lamenting the ugliness that starts to unfold, once we start to burrow down into the super tiny.

Another thing, is that if they don’t find the Higgs boson, what does that do to the Standard Model. Also, what’s it going to take experimentally prove String Theory. Even if the Higgs boson does indeed come onto the scene when the LHC goes online, how much farther to a unified theory will this get us?
