Will the Skins/Haynesworth deal go down in history as the biggest dud in pro sports?

What can they do with this guy? They’ve given him $32M to do jack shit. It looks like they’d need to pay him another $9M to get rid of him, so he wins again.

There has to be some sort of breach of contract happening here. I dunno.

What do the SDMB NFL brains think of this fuckin turd?

It’s unreal. He got a $100 million contract, the Foreskins just paid him $21 million on April 1…but now he’s got a good freaking coach!

Apparently he’s unhappy with the Skins switch to a 3-4…too fucking bad!

As Shanahan said in a presser “He’ll play free safety if that’s where we want him to play!”

He’s a headcase and a contract year player. A total turd. Even his own teammates are publicly calling him out for being a selfish jerk.

And yet, if the Lions threw a 3rd and 4th rounder at the Redskins, I’d love to have Haynesworth in Detroit.

Also, compare him to Carl Pavano’s Yankee contract.

There’s an article in today’s Washington Post detailing the relevant passages in the NFLPA CBA. Apparently the player’s union had previously warned Haynesworth that he could be screwing himself if he were to miss mandatory team activities without cause, and it would seem that now that he has missed the first day of mandatory minicamp, the team has at least a small foothold in taking legal action against him.

Also, for contracts that ended up being an albatross, see Dontrelle Willis.

Someone recently coined the perfect portmanteau word for the bad pro sports contract: an “albatrocity”. (Not to be confused with anybody’s S&M fantasies involving Jessica Alba.)

“Ended up”? The Tigers pretty much said, “Hey - let’s sling this big weird bird around our necks!” when they made that one.

I’d say it was worth it to get Miguel Cabrera, though.

Out of curiousity, is there any trade in the last 20 years that matches the Herschel Walker trade, or is that still the gold standard of really bad deals?

Getting Cabrera did not require giving Willis an extention.

As for the op, no it isn’t the work contract of all time and neither are Pavano/Willis. They simply aren’t enough money.

Who could have predicted that a guy willing to stomp on a player’s unprotected head while wearing cleats would turn out to be trouble? I tell ya, it’s a mystery.

That’s what I thought, but the thread seems to be focusing on contracts, not trades.

I would put the Rockies’ decision to give Mike Hampton a massive 7 year contract right up there. He wound up sucking major wind in pre-humidor Coors Field, then was a giant one man disabled list for 5 of the next 6 years.

This is not in the last 20 years, but I would imagine the gold standard in bad deals would have to be Babe Ruth to the Yankees for cash (and a loan).

As a Giants fan, I was fricking thrilled when the 'Skins decided to start slagging this sack of shit around.

  1. Haynesworth wants to be a D tackle in a 43 scheme.
  2. Shanahan wants to play a 34 scheme.
  3. Snyder wants to throw money at everything in sight. Who cares if the player is worth it, will mtach the system, or would mesh with the team?
  4. As noted before, Haynesworth is a nutjob.
  5. Even though Haynesworth would probably only play half the defenseive snaps or so, Shanahan seems unwilling to have a modified defense that plays both 34 and 43.

Seems like a perfect sotrm of stupid to me.

A lot of stupid perhaps. But not a perfect storm.

Contention on point 2/5. Shanahan hasn’t said much about the type of scheme he wants to run. Reports from the players has indicated that it seems to be a fairly even mix of 34 and 43.

The new D coordinator has said that he intends to use princess Albert in a way to allow him to roam free a little more. Also that he probably won’t be a full time NT.

As for Synder, maybe you’re right. But he really does seem to have handed the reins over to Allen this year. I’m optimistic that will continue, but you never know.

As for Albert… I think the best thing for him would be to hold his contract and bench him for the year. Call it the ‘sit and think about what you did’ concept. It would drive Albert up a wall. But with the money at stake, most likely he’ll give them a bunch of money back and get released or traded.

We can’t forget about JaMarcus Russell this quickly. Try as we might.

As much of a dick Haynesworth is, I can’t help but have a bit of grudging admiration for essentially The Great Train Robbery he and his agent are pulling off. The Redskins, or Snyder, at least, were so freaking idiotic for guaranteeing that much money without any recourse for non-compliance that they deserve to be dined-and-dashed on like this. Dupes.

Or Ryan Leaf.

Or Tony Mandarich.
