Will The Straight Dope ever make a comeback on TV?

Even reruns of the old A&E episodes with Mike Lukas would be nice to see. You would think that with all the “educational” cable channels, someone would see the light.

Is there any reasonable hope that the Straight Dope on TV will some day get a miracle resurrection? How many episodes of the original show were produced?

I thought Mike Lucas was a hottie

I’m not sure if it was Lukas I saw (tall bald guy?) but in the one episode of the televised Straight Dope I caught, he simply read an article word-for-word. Truth be told, I didn’t see what advantage the TV show offered.

Failing the introduction of the SDMB Ferrets ™,we can be almost certain that the show will be responsible for the inevitable Hamster Massacre if this message board is mentioned.

Of course increased revenues from TV could lead to a whole SDMB Ferret Farm[sup]TM[/sup] replete with new high rise cages and padded exercise wheels and whatnot. Then instead of a Hamster Massacre, we could have massive Hamster forced retirements.

I have never had the pleasure of watching the televised version. Does the wit and sarcasm come off in the manner in which it is intended? And if they’re going to have someone just read the articles, then I believe it should be done by none other than Cecil himself!

Jesus, I hope not–I found the show embarrassing and unwatchable. If they try it again, I hope they get some decent writers and a director who knows what the hell he’s doing.

You mean like Penn & Teller?

I have no idea who wrote it or directed it–all I know is I struggled through two episodes before consigning it to “never again.”

Oh, I loved it. It definitely appealed to my short attention span and manic approach to learning (i.e. stuff me full of interesting factoids with loads of visual and verbal input, make me laugh and then go away.)

I also thought Mike Lukas was kinda hot, in a Michael Stipe sort of way.

a few years after the SD show was over I saw Mike Lucas do some stand-up at a comedy club in the Chicago area. He was quite funny.

He pointed out that if you “spoonerize” his name it’s Like Mucous. He used to get teased about that.
