This isn’t quite Model 3 news, but I found this to be an interesting development.
Tesla is now offering free one-month trials for their autopilot software. The hardware is built into all their cars, so when you pay for autopilot you’re paying for the software.
There’s a certain part of this that rubs me the wrong way (even as a software developer myself), but overall I think it’s a great idea. The largest cost of autopilot is the software, so of course you should pay for it, and like many other pieces of software it makes sense for them to offer a free trial.
Still, it’s somewhat amusing to have DLC for your car. I think it does demonstrate how much farther head Tesla is compared to the others in this department. No one else has figured out over-the-air updates yet, let alone downloadable trial software.
