Why can’t they ever make these dates precede April 16th. Seriously, why are they always after tax day?
If these people are destitute after May 22 and the world has not ended, can they sue Camping for fraud?
Just to play the Devil’s Advocate here, I can see a reason why he would NOT sell. If the end of the world happens as expected, what would he do with the money? Can you take it with you? What’s the value of a dollar in Heaven? Should you convert to Yen or Pounds? Is God on the gold standard?
Why prepare for the end of the world? Getting your affairs in order is useless if everything vanishes, poof, all at once.
OTOH, if it’s the End of the World only for some, then it does make sense. But how confident can anyone be they will be taken or left? What if God doesn’t have the same opinion of you that you do? Could be a BIG mistake to assume!
So all we need is at least one person to say, each morning, “the world’s going to end TODAY!” and it will never happen.
I hope the wold does end in May, 2011. The exact date doesn’t matter. I just want people to shut up about it; it’s one of the most worthless subjects of conversation that has ever come down the pike.
Unless you are one of the elect, the world won’t actually end until October 21st, so you have a bit of a wait still while people continue to talk about it.
ETA: And prepare yourself for more fun, if in the unlikely event the world doesn’t end on October 21st, because next year is…2012!

OMG!!! My kitties are all still here! They must be sinners! They’re going to Hell!!! OMG!!!
Get the word out between now and May 21 that people need to get right with the Lord, and do it in a hurry.
Since we see signs and billboards (as opposed to signs and wonders) about this upcoming event, it’s clear that they’re already doing this. What they could do with the money from the sale of the broadcast licenses is do a lot more.
If you believe God’s chosen you as the messenger to announce to the world its upcoming end, it would be hard not to believe you’re among the elect. So it’s hard to believe Camping, if he’s sincere, feels the need to worry about having broadcast licenses on May 22.
That guy is an idiot.
For end of the world hysteria…you must have a date that is far off so that you can milk it for money by doing books and speaking engagments and others…but not TOO far off that people don’t care. Say 10-15 years.
1999/2000 followed by 2012 is PERFECT. That means we will soon see the next doomsday be 2023-2028. I wonder what it will be?
That guy should have predicted the end of the world in May 2025.
The rest of your concerns about their using up their resources by May 21 is pretty valid, but please tell me the above is just snarkiness & not stupidity. What do you think most fundies think about stillborns or those who die in infancy or pregnant women who die? That the babies go to Hell?
Uh, yeah. I’ve been told many, many times over the years by fundies that unless you accept jesus as your personal savior, you’re going to hell. No exceptions. What makes you think 8-month old babies/fetuses are exempt?
Have a lot of fundies told you that babies who die at birth or very young universally go to hell? While I’m sure there are folks who take this view, it’s not (afaik) very common even in the fundy crowd. And certainly it’s not the majority view of most Christians.

Why would babies get a pass, but not members of some lost sub-african bushman tribe? Both are humans who have not accepted jesus. Neither has had the opportunity to hear the “good news”.
What’s the difference?
You’re using logic. You think they’re logical?

 Yourself. Again, I ask you…have these fundies TOLD you that babies who die at birth or children who die young are damned to hell? It’s a simply ‘yes’ or ‘no’ question.
Various Christian factions look at it in different ways. Some Christian factions believe in predestination…which means you are born saved or damned, regardless of your thoughts on the matter. Catholics have ceremonies to baptize babies or those who were still born, which covers them from damnation (or whatever) until they are able to be brought up in the church. Many other Christian sects have similar rituals. And, also, there is the ‘Jesus died for humanities sins’ thingy, which means that all that original sin stuff has already been covered, so a baby wouldn’t start off with some burden of sin on their soul.
I don’t know where you are getting that you have to accept Jesus (thus, you have to be an adult, basically) in order to be ‘saved’, and that everything else automatically means damnation, but I’d be surprised if very many people take that to the ridiculous extremes you are going to with this. So, again, I ask you…have any of these fundies actually said this right out? Or is it a strawman you are making up? A simply yes or no will suffice.
Humans are very good at rationalization.

Yes.
And the ones claiming this also say that this is why they are anti-abortion; the aborted babies are destined for hell.
I’m going with the woman (or guy…whatever) in this picture for when the world will end (she has it a bit wrong but close enough and it is the larger notion I am going with).
Well all they have to do is be right once.
Yeah but on the upside we won’t have to put up with them gloating about being right.

Well, there are all sorts of fringe idiots out there. Me, I’d just roll my eyes at them and perhaps give them the ‘I feel sorry for you because you are too stupid to words’ look then walk away. YMMV.
