Will Tiger break 60 today?

Seven holes down in round two of the Buick Open, and he’s seven under. He pitched in from 33 yards on a par 4. Damn, I wish I could watch this, but the shot tracker in PGATour.com is the best I can do at work. :frowning:

Since he never has, it is unlikely.I would like to see it.

Guess he fixed that lousy putting stroke of his…

Well, he bogeyed 18, and has made the turn to the front at -6 (he started on 10). Drive in the right side of the fairway on 1. His hot start cooled a bit on 17 and 18.

No chance now. Oh well. It was an exciting run while it lasted.

He is 9 under A birdie on 18 will only be a 62. What a hack.
He will make the cut though.

Looks like a 63 (he’s 2ft from the last hole for par). Still a hell of a round though. Puts him within solid striking distance of the lead tomorrow.

Tiger ties for the lead on the loud and crazy 17th hole. Perfect time and great showmanship. That is a par 3 that once the gates open, people go straight to it and wait for the golfers to get to 17. They have bleachers to sit on and they serve drinks. It could be expensive to spend a day there. It gets wild and crazy every year. Tigers birdie could be heard a long way.
Tiger is tied and can not drive at all. He is so far out of sync that he is missing fairways by so much that he is landing in other fairways.

Well, guess who’s taking this going away and making his detractors look like birthists combined with flat-Earthers for like the SIX thousandth time.

I don’t feel like starting a whole new thread for this, so I’ll ask: Why is he still entering rinky-dink little tournaments like this? I mean, it’s one of the easiest courses on the tour, there’s no real prestige behind it, you know the opposition has about as much chance as a house of cards in a hurricane and the final round will be about as exciting as the Pro Bowl. He doesn’t need any more money or exposure, never mind what he’s getting from his myraid endorsements.

He’s lapped the field about 25 times and ensured that the PGA will have slightly more prestige than the Indy Racing League after he retires. The only thing left…literally, the last, last benchmark that he has yet smashed to bits…is Jack Nicklaus’ major record. I can understand participating in the odd Kemper Open or Pebble Beach Pro-Am, y’know, to stay in shape and meet the Tour requirements and get his face out and all, but what’s getting out of beating up a bunch of little boys anymore?

(Sorry…what really irks me is that ESPN and the Golf Channel are going to spend several hours hashing over the sports equivalent of the Pope being Catholic. Seriously, you guys ever get bored or what?)

It’s a Buick event and Buick is one of his main sponsors. He probably made more money just showing up than he will by winning the tournament.

I think Buick is dropping their sponsorship of the PGA after this year. That will make for some scrambling among the events. I think they have named sponsorship of four events.

P.S. I guess just two events this year.

The pros sometimes like a less severe course. Warwick cut 300 yards out of the course a few years ago to make it easier. There was too much grumbling about how tough it was getting. But a course where they can string birdies has its own appeal.

I think Buick and Tiger severed their relationship a few months back.

He still has Snead’s record of 82 tournaments won (Nicklaus is second with 73). This one will make 70 for Tiger. He usually plays a tourney or two before a major as a warm-up.

Oops. Actually this was “only” his 69th win.

  1. Tiger and Buick severed their relationship already. So he didn’t come this year out of loyalty to Buick. He did in the past, perhaps, but he has also said he really likes this tour stop because he likes the fact that the fans are very loyal to it. And shooting 63 is fun, you know.

  2. This tournament is 2 weeks before a major. Tiger almost always plays in whatever tournament is 2 weeks before a major, to prep for the major. This year, the difference is that they decided to squeez the Firestone tournament in between the two, so he’s also going to have to go there and play before heading to Hazeltine for the PGA.

  3. Hi, Opal!

Rumor is that Penske and Saturn corp will save the tourney.

Since the usual golf fans are all here in this thread, I came across this gem today:

Worst Golfer Competition. Features four hackers playing Sawgrass. I don’t want to give away too much, but the highest score on number 17 was 66.
