It’s been a hotly contested race, with a lot of good challengers and the voters seem to be overwhelmingly in favor of giving President Xi a 3rd term. Was wondering what 'dopers thoughts were. Is an upset in order? Or will Xi just walk away with another term…almost uncontested? A landslide victory for Xi? With the CCP retain power or will one of the other myriad parties in China wrest control for this term?
The party conclave opens today, and Xi seems poised to secure his 3rd term in a hard-fought battle. What do you all think of his chances??
Well, you guys are no fun! Ok, yes, Xi will almost certainly ‘win’ his 3rd term. What will be interesting is if any of the opposing factions even attempt to protest (I believe last time one guy didn’t vote for Xi). Personally, I think Xi will, again, get all or almost all of the votes, though I think his hold on power is more tenuous than it was the last time…more tenuous on one had and more firm on another.
What opposing factions are you referring to? My arguably simplistic understanding is that the Communist Party nominates someone and everyone in the party agrees to vote for that person. It’s not in any way democratic. If the term “opposing factions” is meant to be “ironic”, I just don’t see the irony.
No, the part of the opposing faction isn’t meant to be ironic. This guy, Jiang Zemin and his faction are the ones who are most engaged with Xi wrt factional infighting and have been for a while now. They are in a sort of death struggle in fact, with Xi’s faction picking off a bunch of their members in 'anti-corruption campaigns and the like. I seriously doubt they will rock the boat in this ‘election’ either, but they are definitely opposed to Xi et al, and there are other factions in the CCP as well…these two are just the most powerful right now (even though Jiang Zemin is like 2000 years old and won’t be around much longer).
No, there isn’t anything like democracy going on here…that was me basically just tongue in cheek, or as my Brit friends would say taking a piss.
He got the, well I guess term limit taken away. In effect, and assuming he can hold onto power, he will be Presitator for Life(tm…arr). Just like Mao…in fact, that what he’s trying to be. The new Mao. Better. Stronger. Faster. Less creepy, less pedofiley, but with a clean, fresh scent!
I think it’s weird how Biden’s admin yesterday said they’re correcting Rahm Emanuel for mocking Jinping yesterday. I realize Biden’s policies emphasize trying to be smooth with world leaders. Yet I don’t think it’s Jingping’s intention to reciprocate. They definitely haven’t changed their minds since earlier this year when they floated the spy balloon over the US. I griped to the White House about this - can’t wait to get their form letter back about it.
The Chinese Communist Party remains pretty opaque to most outsiders, and even many Chinese. The reality is that the decisions of their leaders tend to be tremendously popular until they are not, when suddenly there is another President experts may or may not know.
