Will you pay for iPod Touch software update?

Apple updated their firmware for the iPhone and iPod Touch to version 1.1.3 today. Some bugfixes and features are free for both gadgets but if you want the applications Mail, Weather, Stocks, Notes, and Maps for the Touch you have to pay $20. If you buy a new Touch everything is included.

Will you pay for the software update/applications? Any problems with it being free of charge for new users or iPhone owners but not existing owners of the Touch?

I don’t think I will buy it. The applications are not that interesting to me and I’m not sure everything will work in Sweden. I can use webpages for the same info and it is just a little bit more cumbersome.

For me Apple loses points for not treating customers the same regarding software. If it was a hardware update I would have no objections since that is what you risk with being an early adopter but I don’t think that should be the case with software. Maybe it is a test to see what the buyers will accept? It is a substantial update though so I’m not that upset.

No way/

I have huge issues with this.

Ditto.

I think this whole idea of charging for updating your SW is bullshit.

Sony updates PSP SW all the time and adds new apps to it, but never charges for it. It doesn’t make any sense.

(It makes even less sense given that the apps are not that compelling, since you can access your email and google maps via safari)

Yeah, I think it sucks. Apple really surprised me with this announcement. It’s like a big ‘fuck you’ to early adopters. (I don’t have a touch, but if I did, I’d be pissed)

I have an iPod Touch that I bought Dec. 26th - no, I won’t pay.

They’ll probably give you store credit like they did with the iPhone price drop. That was unnecessary IMO.

I did this morning. Not having access to an iPhone, I was impressed. The Mail client is the best mobile mail client I’ve used. I just thought of it as paying $20 for a really nice mail program, rather than a paid OS update.

I just bought my iPod Touch 6 days ago.

So yeah, this kind of irks me.

Take it back, and get a new one. Apple gives you 14 days.

Returning it- I’ve heard Apple will charge a 10% restock fee ($29-$39, depending which model you have) so it would be cheaper to just buy the apps. Or jailbreak and get them free - iPhone apps have been our for months on jailbroken Touches.

Hmm . . . I got it from Costco. How does Apple know it’s a new one? They can’t have already preloaded the new stuff onto everything in inventory, can they?

With this and the iphone price drop, I wouldn’t be surprised if the next time apple releases something new(cough…macbookair…cough) the otherwise early adopters will wait for 2-3 months before buying.

Isn’t this fairly normal practice for Apple? In the same way, say, as corporate Microsoft users tend to wait for at least one Service Pack before an OS upgrade, Apple customers wait a few months for the inevitable extras and price-drop?

Or am I just being cynical?
