Wimbledon 2009

If you’ve got Jennifer’s phone number I’ll back you to the hilt.

If I had Jennifer’s phone number I’d be way too busy to faff around with you people.

If you’re right, then you can gloat to your heart’s content, but I just can’t see Hewitt holding it together and beating Fed in the final.

I’ll just ask.

Does Andy Murray have any real chance against Roger when Roger plays even his most average level grass game?

I mean, Roger is going to have to do horribly to lose to anyone, including Andy Murray.

Certainly. Murray is the only player in the world who’s played Federer more than once and won more than half the time, IIRC. He’s taken 6 out of 8 career matches from Federer, and arguably he’s better at playing Federer than anyone else on the Tour, including Nadal.

I suspect you didn’t mean to write that. Nadal is an obvious counter-example, having a 13-7 record against Federer. 13 is more than half of twenty.

:smack: Yeah, I meant to say other than Nadal.

The first Sunday being a rest day at Wimbledon, this gives us all a chance to mow the lawn and replenish our dwindling supplies of cucumber sandwiches (sans crusts) and fresh strawberries. Bottles of Pimms being strangely absent from the shelves of the local Tesco supermarket, I am reduced to drinking Pino Grigio (Special Offer: £3.99/$6.58). Such is life.

Anyway, enough of my problems. Please find below the draw for the 4th round commencing tomorrow.

Federer has hardened to 8-13 for the mens title, with Murray also shortening up at 5-2. Djokovic is next best at 12-1. In the womens event Serena is available at 7-4, a little shorter than her sister (in both senses) at 9-4. Azarenka is third favourite at 10-1.

Murraymania is gradually building momentum. The player looked very strong against Viktor Troicki yesterday but I have to question the quality of his opponent. Still, you can’t do more that beat the player in front of you by 3 sets to love, and the Scot must be happy with his form. As long as Sean Connery doesn’t call him in the middle of the night to wish him good luck against Wawrinka, I fancy him to take care of the Swiss without a problem. Whether or not he will be around to face the other Swiss in the draw next Sunday is another matter, but I take him to reach the final.

If he does, and should he emerge victorious, prepare for knighthoods, peerages, and the freedom of Scotland. More importantly, he’ll never have to buy his own drink for the rest of his life.

I have no idea who this Troicki fellow is but apparently he’s ranked #31, so he can’t be that bad.

What’s up with Nadal? Ted Robinson said that they have been hearing there are some “family changes” that also may have contributed to Nadal not playing Wimbledon this year.

Girlfriend broke up with him? Three-way went bad and now she’s running off with the other girl? Perhaps he’s running off with the other girl and the ex is making his life hell?

Something involving his girlfriend? :stuck_out_tongue:

His parents are getting divorced.

This true???

Yes.

Sorry to hear about the tough time Nadal and his family are having.

The Williamses both reached the quarterfinals easily today, and Federer won a really tight match against Soderling. Only one break in the whole thing, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6. It’s good to see Soderling appears to be building on what he did in Paris. Tommy Haas and Djokovic also reached the final eight with straight-set wins. Verdasco and Karlovic are having a serving competition (winner gets Federer).

Don’t tell Really Not All That Bright, but Hewitt lost the first two sets to Radek Stepanek, although he’s up a break in the third. Mauresmo took the first set from Safina, but Safina’s got the lead in the second.

Interesting point.

How well is a #31 seed supposed to play facing a #3 seed. What is the par. Who knows. Anyway, he didn’t play well but perhaps Murray made him look bad.

By the way, Hewitt lost the first two sets to Radek Stepanek, although he’s up a break in the third.

Two breaks for Hewitt, actually. Play has been suspended (I guess it’s raining), so maybe we’ll get to see how well the new roof works.

It seems the new roof is working to expectations. It’s not leaking, as far as I can make out.

Anyway, file away Safina v Mauresmo as the first match to be played in anger under the Centre Court roof. It’s bound to come up in a quiz somewhere.

Good to hear. If Mauresmo keeps playing tough, this match could have some other significance, too. And Hewitt crushed Stepanek 6-1 in the third, and is up 4-1 (two breaks) in the fourth.

So, what is the point of taking the mid-Sunday off at Wimbledon? How did that tradition begin?

Makes for a great Monday, but a bit odd.

I see that Safina won and Hewitt is doing well. Hewitt can be an ass, but I’m cheering a bit for him since he has dropped off a bit.
