Wimbledon 2009

How is that going for you?

Murray’s serving was abysmal for the level at which he’s supposed to be playing.

The key statistic was Roddick getting 80% of his first serves in, which left Murray with little to work with given the power of the American’s service. I think Roddick overperformed while Murray fell short of his best. I haven’t seen the figures but the Scot seemed to make a lot of unforced errors.

I’m not sure that this is as relevant as Murray’s figures for first serves. I don’t have it, but I watched the match and he sure muffed a lot of them.

I didn’t watch the match as it was tape delayed here and I knew the outcome before it was broadcast. I’m curious though, did it seem that the crowd’s expectations and the extreme pressure from the public effected Murray’s play? There was definitely a huge weight on his shoulders and Henman often alluded to the fact that it was tough to play under that kind of pressure. I wonder if it was a factor at all in Murray’s game today.

Roddick put 75% of his first serves in; Murray 52%.

Roddick had 21 Aces; Murray 25.

Roddick had 24 Unforced Errors; Murray had 20.

Roddick won exactly 2 more points than Murray.

They were relatively even the whole match. Murray lost because he didn’t come up with the important points in the tiebreakers. And that would require a point by point analysis of both tiebreakers.

If Andy Roddick plays like he did today, he has a good 30% chance to beat Federer. This assumes “machine” Federer doesn’t show up and play unbeatable.

Otherwise, I figure Andy has about a 10% chance to win, assuming Federer plays poorly, which rarely occurs.

Who’s “unbeatable?”

I mean if Federer shows up and plays his “unbeatable” game, which he often does at Wimbledon. Poorly written on my part.

The guy who won 40 straight matches at Wimbledon before losing to Nadal in last year’s final, probably.

What are the actual percentage odds on Roddick beating Federer out of Vegas?

I have to think 20% Roddick winning is generous, right?

I can’t speak for Vegas but over here Roddick is generally 7-1 to beat Federer tomorrow, giving him a 12.5% chance of victory.

It was something of both.

52% first serves in was well down on Murray’s tournament average. However, Roddick’s 75% figure meant that Murray’s returns made, previously about 74% for the whole tournament, were also way down in the 50% - 55% range.

Venus and Serena have just started their match.

I don’t even like playing against good friends, I can’t imagine having to play my sister in the finals of a Grand Slam event.

Well, THAT was pretty dull. Serena’s game: mostly on. Venus’ game: mostly on the first set, totally whacked the second set once baby sister had the advantage.

About five points really worth watching.

They really have never figured out how to have a good match against each other.

Yeah… it’s as if the tennis gods knew that they’d never have good matches together so whenever one is playing really well the other one tends to suck a bit (or take time off to attend to her sportswear line, or whatever).

So, is something changing at the US Open this year? My wife overheard something on the commercial about “ladies joining men” for firs time or something?

Anyone see this? What was it?

They’re talking about the US Open golf tournament - the men’s and women’s tournaments will be played back to back in 2014 for the first time.

Ah, I was concerned they were putting both finals on the same day or something…which would be crazy.

I’m editing to note that when I told my wife this, she said she doesn’t think that is the ad she saw. She thought it was tennis players.

Anyone?

I see that the Williams sisters have also won the Doubles Championship, so Venus gets that this year, at least.
