Wimbledon 2010

The umpire just had to sit on his butt for 11 hours. Give an award to the ball boys and girls.

I missed the presentation - what did they give the players?

Wait.

Was this the 2nd or 1st round?

1st.

Not like I’m a tennis expert or anything, but they just said that on the BBC. They’re not mentioning Isner’s doubles match, though, so maybe that’s been cancelled or delayed or something, like Mahut’s was yesterday.

The rest of our lives, I guess.

This one ended on a solid winner. That felt right. Isner hit a very strong backhand return off Mahut’s serve, and it landed at Mahut’s feet as he was coming to net. Mahut couldn’t do much with the backhand volley, and Isner ripped a backhand winner up the sideline. Then he fell down and started kicking his legs in the air.

The final tally was 11 hours and five minutes, 215 aces, 490 winners, and 980 points. Isner had 112 aces and 246 winners, but Mahut won more points, 502 to 478.

They are saying Isner may quit doubles. He and his partner have a gentleman’s agreement about what to do if one goes deep in a singles tournament. This should count.

Yeah, the announcer said, “Isner through to the 3rd round.”

It’s 2nd then.

Right now the Wimbledon schedule says they are both supposed to play doubles today. The court is to be determined, and the time is just “after 6.” I don’t see how Isner can play. His partner is Sam Querrey, and Querrey is in the first set of his second round singles match right now.

In case this crossed anyone else’s mind, Mahut and Isner are on opposite sides of the doubles draw, so they couldn’t meet each other in unless their teams both made the finals.

I *sooooo *want that to happen.

Cite that this is a first-round match. Don’t forget they started on Tuesday. Everybody else in singles is playing the second round today.

They get rotated out every two or three hours. I was a Wimbledon ball boy in 1994.

It would be ace. Ace x100, perhaps.

The Beeb are still saying it’s the first round.

I am seeing a lack of Mahut-Isner jokes online.

Here’s a better citation. Bottom quarter of the draw.

That is so cool. Do you have a picture?
By the way, check out this neat commercial with Andy Murray.

Tennis Magic with Andy Murray

Are the line judges also rotated?

I’m wondering if, outside of fundamentally multi-day games like test cricket or golf, this is the longest single game/match/etc. in any sport.

There might have been longer snooker games, but that’s obviously not as strenuous.

Yup, the 1985 World Snooker Championship Final lasted over 14 hours. I was only ten but was really into snooker, stayed up the entire time to watch it and was devastated when Steve Davis eventually lost.

There were monster billiard games back in the day. In fact the had to change the rules to stop them. Can find a cite as my google fu is weak and the searches are swamped with pool and other links.

Yes, but it’s in a trunk 6,000 miles away. Anyway, I don’t think my haircut at that age is something I need to be sharing.

They switch positions, but IIRC they don’t get switched out during a match.

I did Goran Ivanisevic’s first-round match (he spit on my shoe!), Thierry Champion’s second-round match, and then had an asthma attack and missed the rest of the tournament.

RNATB…You need to start an “Ask the Wimbledon Ballboy” thread.

One quick question, is it more work to be one of the two ballboys at the net, or one of the four at the end of the court. My guess: Being at the net is harder.

I think the linesmen (and lineswomen) get rotated out every 30 minutes or so. That is what I was told on this board last year in the US open thread.
