Wimbledon 2010

This stood out amongst some great lines.

I’m enjoying Wimbledon this year. Usually i’m only watching it for Mansour Bahrami.

I’m usually just trying to get a peek up Sharapova’s skirt.

At the Qatar Tennis Tournements they are rotated after a certain number of sets, as are the ball kids.

And the chair umpire got “a crystal bowl, a Wimbledon tie and silver cufflinks to mark the occasion.” Mahut also did play the first set of his doubles match yesterday. He and Clement lost the set in a tiebreak. And by the time they get back on court today, Clement will have played a third-round singles match against Federer. So once again we get to see if Federer is improving his form. He’s 7-3 lifetime against Clement, and has won the last six times they’ve played. The last time Clement beat him was at the Australian Open in 2001. They last played on clay in Estoril. But they’re not playing until after Henin-Petrova and Hewitt-Monfils.

Isner will be taking the court against Thiemo De Bakker in a few minutes. Isner has to be at a movement disadvantage but the Mahut match put in perspective just how hard it is to break Isner’s serve on grass. Mahut looked like the fresher player yesterday and for a lot of that fifth set, but he still couldn’t win four points off Isner’s serve. In fact he had trouble even winning three. He had two break points at 51-51 in the last set, and those were his only chances in the last three sets.

De Bakker just took the first set off Isner 6-0. It took 16 minutes. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a set that short.

I feel for Isner. He’s worked so hard…

Wish Gilbert would quit telling us Isner should quit…

Isner did manage to get his feet under him, at least, after losing the first eight games. De Bakker is up 5-3 in the second set, and Isner is winning essentially one point per game on De Bakker’s serve- so he’s not able to put any pressure on him at all. Isner won only nine points in the first set, which is also pretty amazing.

In the men’s game, anyway. Steffi Graf used to win entire matches that way. (Including at least one slam final).

I meant the time elapsed, not the bagel itself. But I’m sure Graf won some matches in around half an hour. Isner is now mercifully done. De Bakker won the third set 6-2 and the entire match took only an hour and 13 minutes. Isner didn’t manage a single ace and lost his serve seven times. He hit 12 more errors than winners, and De Bakker hit 25 winners and only five errors. Isner never had a break point. In other words this is exactly what you’d expect to happen if a professional had to play for three hours one day, seven hours the next day, another hour the third day, and then come back to play three more sets the day after that. I hope the crowd gave him a long round of applause anyway. He couldn’t bring it today but he made a hell of an effort.

I heard one of the commentators say that Isner has little skin left on toes.

If so, OUCH!

I was kicking myself for not getting up early enough to watch this match, but now I am ok with missing it. I don’t think anyone really thought Isner had any more in his tank, but it would have been nice if he could have at least kept up his serving game.

I hope Mahut and Clement can make it a few more rounds in doubles.

There was a 6-0, 6-0 womens’ match in 1970 that lasted 20 minutes.

Graf won the 1988 French Open final in 32 minutes.

Venus, Hewitt, and Djokovic won easily in the first few hours of play. Federer should be up soon. And just to make it official, Isner pulled out of the doubles match. I forget who they were supposed to play but I assume their spot was given to a lucky loser since it’s the first round.

Ah, Isner is out.

Can’t blame him for losing.

Federer finally gets an easy win, beating Clement 6-2, 6-4, 6-2. He did much better against Clement’s serve than he did against Falla or Bozoljac, and he went 5/10 on break points, which is much better than what he did in the other matches. He’ll get Jurgen Melzer on Monday. Roddick is in a tight match with Kohlschreiber. Roddick took the first set 7-5, but Kohlschreiber just won set two in a tiebreak.

What happened with Hanescu? What was with the melt down?

Monday, round of 16 Day.

Jelana Jankovic retires at 1-6 0-3 to Zvonerava. Jankovic was getting whipped.

Venus wins the first set against Groth 6-4. (who?)

Guess the two biggest womens matches are later. Sharapova/Serena Clijsters/Henin

Federer/Melzer is just about to start. ESPN just said that they have never played each other!
Edit, Venus was just broken. Groth leads 2-0 in 2nd set.

She’s a young player who is having a breakout year. She made the fourth round at the French, but I hadn’t heard of her before that and I don’t think a lot of other people had either. She’s from Slovakia but now plays for Australia.
