Wimbledon 2010

Lu’s father died in 2000, but it’s no surprise he was thinking about him after the biggest and most surprising win of his professional career. Roddick admitted he’s going to be pissed off (his words) at this loss and said the problem was his return game. He converted one out of eight break points and he definitely could have won if he’d done more with those.

Tsvetana Pironkova beats Venus Williams 6-2 6-3

Venus is out. Didn’t see that one coming. Its nice to see even the pros have difficulty dealing with that off pace game!

Anybody have Zvonareva-Pironkova as one of the Wimbledon semifinals?

Yeah, Venus did not look like she was playing her best.

I bet she’ll still win doubles, though.

All of these great Scrabble words, if they were only one letter shorter.

ETA: and not illegal in multiple ways, of course.

I want to use vuvuzela for a scabble word. Get rid of the pesky V’s and U’s.

I get tired of using uvula.

Try vulva.

Serena moves on. With this inexperienced field she’s going to be the overwhelming favorite. Kanepi has a lead on Kvitova, but it’s too soon to say what will happen. Kanepi had a few match points in the second-set tiebreak, but couldn’t close it out. She now leads 3-0 in the third set.

Awww… Thanks a lot! I was watching this match on the NBC feed and it is only 5 all in the first set. Now I don’t have a good excuse to sit on my butt and not get anything done!!

Freaking NBC.

No worries. Even knowing the outcome hasn’t motivated me to get up and start doing anything productive.

That’s the spirit. Disappointing outcome, for me. I was pulling for Kanepi and she just couldn’t close the deal. She had those match points in the tiebreak, went up -0 in the third and just gave it away. She had at least one match point but ended up losing. Too bad. So the women’s semis are Serena vs. Kvitova, and Zvonareva vs. Pironkova.

I thought this was funny: the Roddick-Lu match was about 4:40, and I read it was the second longest of the tournament. I don’t think that’s going to impress many people or stick in a whole lot of memories.

So watching this Legends Doubles match, I have to say that Martina Hingis is awfully easy on the eyes. Like, damn!

Federer vs. Berdych and Djokovic vs. Lu are underway. The Williams sisters are also playing in a quarterfinal doubles match. They won the first set and are trailing by a break in the second. This one is a possible preview of the singles final, since Serena is on one side of the net and Zvonareva is on the other.

Zvonareva and Vesnina beat the Williams sisters in three sets, which has to go down as an even bigger upset than Venus losing yesterday. At the French Open the sisters finished a non-calendar year Grand Slam in doubles, and grass in particular plays to their strengths.

Meanwhile Djokovic is up two sets to none and it looks like he’s having no trouble with Lu. Berdych is up 3-0 on Federer in the third set after they split the first two sets.

She’s 29. I find it highly amusing that she is playing in a “legends” match.

Seems like the next generation of womens’ tennis players will be washed up at 19.

She’s younger than Venus Williams.

Federer just had three break points on Berdych’s serve at 3-2 in the fourth set, but Berdych saved them all. They’re at deuce on Federer’s serve at 3-3, and that game could make the difference.

Federer looks like he’s about to lose.

Down 2 sets to 1 and down a break.
