Win 7 CD Drive

Windows 7 Home Premium… I have a DVD/CD drive which works well. It is Drive E. Down below the listing of that, I see CD Drive H. It does nothing but ask me to insert a disk. Where does that come from and how to get rid of it? My computer is HP Touchsmart 310.

It’s a drive for removable media like a flash drive or a SD card or such. According to the specs of the computer, you have a 6-in-1 digital media card reader. So I am guessing the H drive is that.

Try inserting a card into that media reader and if the contents come up under “H-Drive” there’s your answer

I already have a removable media card and that is shown as drive F, and a USB drive which is shown as drive G. But what is drive H?

Well try this

Go to start and type Disk Management

Give it a minute as it will be scanning all the drives connected to your computer

At the top right it will list your hard drives and your DVD/CD drive

At the bottom right it will list anything assigned a letter.

Scroll down till you find your “H Drive”

It’ll say something like “Disk 5 Removable H”

Right click and go to properties

And this will tell you what it is. In my case it says “Generic USB SD Reader” Or whatever

This should let you know

If it’s a six-in-one card reader, it has a different drive letter for each of the six items, whether they are inserted or not. Unlike USB drives, there is apparently no way to detect if the device is present or not. Or, at least, the drivers don’t do that.

Darn. I thought this was a contest. I’ve never seen a 7 CD drive and was hoping I could win one.
