I’ve looked in a number of places on the net, and haven’t found a useful, succinct solution for my home networking problem:
I have a Dell Dimension 8200 running Windows XP with a Canon MultiPASS F30 hooked up to it.
I have an Apple iBook which can run OS9 or OSX. How can I print to the Canon from the laptop? Or perhaps share my internet connection to the laptop as well?
I have some network cable, and may have a small Ethernet hub floating around somewheres.
First, have the iBook running OSX. Then go to the Apple website and search on Rendezvous. That is a protocol that networks Mac and Windows shared resources. It is built into OSX. Also trying searching in your Mac help files under Rendezvous.
Hook up a print server to you Canon and then connect your iBook to your network. Most of the stand-alone print servers support AppleTalk so connectivity is pretty easy. This is assuming that you have Mac drivers for the printer.
As for Internet connection sharing, do you have multiple IP addresses from your ISP? If not you’re going to need a router so that your PC and Mac will be assigned their own IP addresses and not conflict with each other when you go online. An 802.11b router gives you the wireless angle if the iBook has an Airport card.
