Win2k Pro Question

My computer seems to be a bit sluggish on startup. I see 29 processes running in Task Manager. In Windows 98, you could Run Msconfig and disable certain apps from running on startup. Is there a tool for Win2k Pro as well? Many thanks in advance.

Remember that with W2K you have access to more of the processes that are running. Some of them are services such as LSASS, WINLOGON, and csrss, etc. I don’t think they absolutely have to run, but other programs may require them. Other than going into the registry and removing the ones your know you don’t need, e.g., winamp agent, there isn’t much sense in stopping those services. 30 processes is about par.

Sure! Right here. The third one down is what I’m looking at…

Alternately, you could go here and download the actual msconfig file and throw it into your win2K machine so you have that utility in win2K. (instructions are included)

Oh! And what Slick said too.

If you’re not sure what the process you are looking at does, search for it online before you disable it, or try disabling them one at a time, reboot, and play around with your computer to see if everything is working OK before going back and disabling the next… don’t wanna screw up your computer!

I swear the I’m not using the SDMB for cheap tech support. Thanks again all

You should go through the services and figure out which ones are on “automatic” that you don’t need. change them to manual.

Start > Run > services.msc > OK
sort by Startup Type
if it’s Automatic, look at what it does and what it’s required for/by. guidelines: things called “Workstation” and “Server” are really important. things called “Help and Support”, “Smart Card”, “Wireless Zero Configuration” can be set to “Manual” if you usually have no need for Help and Support, Smart Cards, or Wireless Configuration respectively. by setting them to “Manual” you ensure they only start when they are required. (setting everything to Manual would conserve memory and CPU, and not break anything, but would make starting some programs require starting many services; so it’s best to leave ones that you would regularly use as “Automatic”.)

Oh, and WINLOGON, LSASS and CSRSS are actually pretty crucial. Windows can’t run without them and won’t let you terminate them even if you try to.

If you have a question as to whether a running process is critical, try

For quick access to a given process, just append it (sans EXE extension) to the end of that URL, i.e.
