OK, so I installed Winamp 3 on my Windows 98 system. Everything’s fine, everything’s well. A couple of nights ago, I play a file which isn’t associated with Winamp, so it got played with RealPlayer. Now, since I tried to get away from Real (RealPlayer or the new RealOne) I only have the RealPlayer Basic which comes with the Windows 98 installation. OK, the video plays fine, and all is well. Now, several times I try to play mp3 files with Winamp. For some reason, the volume is way down, only on Winamp. Everything else works fine, but even when I put the Window’s volume to max and the Winamp volume to max, the volume is still way to low.
Has anybody else had this problem? Is there some well known problem of RealPlayer screwing up the competition? Since I still have only a dial up Internet connection, I don’t want to re-download and reinstall Winamp, although if none of you have any solutions, I guess I’ll have to do that. But if any of you have any solutions or suggestions that may help, I’d love to hear them. Thanks.
i don’t know why but a few weeks ago i had problems playing my mp3’s off of winamp3. the volume went down and after a few songs an error message came up which resulted in winamp shutting down on my windows xp. i removed the program from my computer and still had the installation saved, so re-installed it and everything has worked fine since. no idea why it did it, but you should try re-installing it and see if that does anything, it should only take a minute or two and could fix the problem.
I don’t think you have a problem with a software conflict. My Windows 98 system has WMP, Winamp and Real existing simultaneously with no issues.
Have you checked the file you were playing to make sure that it wasn’t damaged or just recorded on lower volume?
Also, (and this may not be your problem here, since you addressed it) Winamp is really sensitive to the mouse scroll. I’ve often wondered what was causing low volume only to find that I forgot to click out of Winamp.
Well, guess I’ll have to re-install it. I tried several songs, so I know that it’s Winamp that’s the problem. Strange, it was working untill I played RealPlayer. Oh well, I’ll give reinstalation a shot, see what happens.
First of all, I highly reccomend removing that crudy piece of spyware called Real Player from your system ASAP. Secondly, the volume control of Real Player messes around directly with the windows wave volume control. If you have the little audio control button in the bottom right of your screen, double click on it to bring up the volume control and see if the wave volume is turned down low.
I have removed it, several times, but for some reason AOL 8.0 keeps saying that it needs it, and keeps bringing it back. I think as long as I fix the problem, download a different program that can play video files such as .rm files, and don’t use RealPlayer again, I should be OK.
