Windows 1.x, 2.x, MSDOS 1.0

In order to round out my archival software collection, I’d like to have the early PC primitives. I have MS-DOS 3.something that was alleged to be one of the more stable DOS builds (also have 5.0, never had 4), and I have Windows 3.1 and 3.11 (Windows for Workgroups).

I would like to have a copy of Windows 1.0 and 2.0, or whatever decimal-point increment thereof was the most popular 1.x and 2.x, and, preferably, some software that ran natively under Windows before 3.x came along. I’d also like a copy of the first version of MS-DOS to be released for general use.

I suppose that it might be necessary to pay for these, although the corresponding early-vintage Mac Systems are freeware.

Where would I find such andediluvian relics? And, of those of you who used them, what are your memories of these early Microsoft OS’s? Were there things you missed about them when you upgraded?

Incidentally, I think that DOS 3.x copy is 3.3

Damn. I had bookmarked a website that had all the old software you mention (that’s where I downloaded DOS and Win 3X) but the site is down now. Damn.

I used DOS 3.3 for a long time. I skipped all the early generations of Windows and went from DOS 3.3 directly to Win95 OSR2. Now I look at everything I skipped and I’m happy I did because it was all pretty crappy. In fact I wish I could have waited until WIN98 because WIN95 OSR2 has some pretty crappy stuff itself.

Yeah. My guess is you can probably do a Net search and find a place to download it.

What you want is abandonware. I’ve found copies of MSDOS 1, 1.1, 2, 3, 3.3 and anything else I could want.

There are some great abandonware rings…

Is a good place to start. Bunch of links, rated, classified, and sorted.

Have fun!

Look out for “Computer Swap Meets” - yes, they do exist. We have quite a few here in KC, and you can find al sorts of things like that, from Windows 1.0 to Microchannel Token Ring cards, to original copies of the Vic-20 “Temple of Aphsai”.

I just threw out a copy of Windows 2.0 - too bad I didn’t know anyone wanted it.

This link might be of interest. It’s about the history of MS DOS and Windows.
The History of Windows from PC Magazine

Microsoft built a software empire on the back of its Windows operating system. Here’s how we got to Windows 98–and where the Microsoft OS is going.
