Windows 98 networking problem

I have 3 computers, named Alexander, Hermes and Zeus, running windows 98 second edition. Zeus can see the other two computers. Alexander and Hermes can see Zeus, but they cannot see each other.

The 3 computers are connected through a simple Ethernet hub. I am not quite sure how they are connected exactly.

The problem started after a technician messed with the computers. How can I make each computer to connect to the other two? Does this sound like a software or hardware problem? Could there be a problem with the hub connections?

My WAG is that it’s software.

Go to each computer, right-click on Network Neighborhood; choose properties. Go to the Identification tab and jot down what you find there. Then go back to the first tab, double-click on tcp/ip and write down what’s entered into the IP Address, Gateway and DNS tabs. Post what you find here and we’ll pick over it.

If my guess is right, the tech probably made a change, say from dynamically allocated IP addresses to static.

Your guess was right! Zeus and Hermes had static IP addresses (192.168.22.1 and 2, with subnet mask 255.255.255.0). I gave Alexander the address 192.168.22.3.

Still one little problem though. Although I can access the computers either typing the NetBIOS name or the IP address, the computers won’t show in the Network Neighborhood. I tried refreshing, but nothing happened.

Nearly every time I come across a p[roblem like this, it’s because one or more of the computers doesn’t have NetBEUI installed; Windows 98 can do peer networking without it, but it does so grudgingly.

Glad I could help. I’m a little fried at the moment from lack of sleep (stupid Dark Tower books), but I can at least give this another bump.

Hm. Are they all on the same workgroup?

Microsoft KB article 134304 has instructions for troubleshooting this problem.
