According to an issue of Games from about six months ago, if your computer uses Windows 98, you could manipulate your screen saver like this:
Access the Screen Saver thus: My Computer>Control Panel>Display; click on the Screen Saver tab; from the pull-down menu choose 3D Text; click on the Settings button and type “Volcano” in the text box. OK this and your screen saver will show the names of 17 active volcanoes around the world; the words float around on the screen.
I did this a few months ago and got it; I should have kept it. But when I tried it yesterday I couldn’t find “3D Text” as an option in the pull-down menu (clicking on the tiny down-pointing triangle). Has something in the system gone awry?
The screensaver might have been moved to another directory, or even deleted.
The name of this screen saver is “3D Text.scr”, and it should be in your Windows/System directory. If it’s not there you may have to re-install it.
On my pull-down menu, it show up right after “3D Pipes”.
On a different version of the 3D Text screen saver you type in “beer” and many different beer names will float around the screen.
Actually it displays volcanos of the Pacific Northwest - extinct, dormant and active.
It is what is known as an “easter egg.” Seach Google to find sites that list them inside various programs.
BTW, later versions of Win2000 do not have the volcano easter egg, but some suggest copying the appropriate .scr file from a Win98 system. YMMV.
Way kewl
Is that possible on the Internet? I have the 3D Text and another 3D option on the Screen Saver list under Display; but if I so much as select either of them the “illegal operation” message appears.
I also have a CD to install Windows 98 Plus!, but I don’t want to screw anything up…
