Windows Constantly Reporting Incorrect Hard Disk Free Space

I’m running Win98SE. I run a bunch of hard drives in my system, and Windows is constantly mis-reportiing the amount of free space on various drives. I’ll get a ‘disk full’ error while copying files, I’ll look under ‘My Computer’ and it’ll show enough free space for what I need. I need to run Scandisk, and that will correct the problem - at least for the time being. Sometimes, I’ll go into My Computer after running Scandisk, and it’ll show 2 of my partitions have the EXACT same amount of free space. Is Windows confusing the 2 drives? I’m running 7 partitions/drives, is there some kind of limit where Window’s get’s confused? Any possible settings that I can change that will stop this from happening? I’ve heard from various techies that running Scandisk can actually do damage to the OS, and it’s bad to keep rerunning it (something about when it converts lost clusters to files). Any ideas?
