Windows networking. How to select which interface to use for Internet?

I am running Windows 7 x64 and connect to the internet through wifi. But at the same time I am configuring my Cisco router and when I connect the ethernet cable to the computer, the internet goes down.

It seems that in Windows, ethernet has precedence over wifi and when there’s a wired network connection present it will route everything through that.

Is there any way to select which interface internet will go through?

I should mention here that even when the router is unconfigured (no IP or DHCP set) the internet will still go down when the cable is connected. Just sensing a cable connection will be enough to route everything there, even if there’s no valid network there.

The value you are looking for is called the Metric - here is a link on changing interface metrics

Thanks! I’ll give it a try
