Windows painted shut!

Not wanting to be a nag, I zipped it when my DH painted the windowsills (inside) last year and then shut them before they dried fully (it was getting cold). Now they wont open (huge surprise … nawt). Anything that can be done to get them open again aside from totally replacing them?

Latex or oil paint?

I had success with a razor knife on sliding windows. Just cut (trim or separate) where the moving surfaces meet.

Latex paint.

I dont think its possible to separate them with a knife since the windows are shut on the area of the interior frame that was painted and the inside window sill prevents me from getting a knife between them. Totally frustrating.

Since you SO didn’t paint them while closed but closed them while they were still wet you may be able to get them to let go.

Wetting the cracks with hot soapy water may help to soften the latex and allow you to open them. Be careful not to soak the wood because it will swell and jam the window tight.

A heat gun might help to expand the wood (then cool and shrink) and soften or dry up the latex enough to get it open as well.

Thanks! Ill give that a try!

Use a thin bladed putty knife or 5 in 1 tool. Lightly hammer it into the jam. Wiggle it back and forth and work your way around the edge.

Thanks everyone. Still working on other SNAFUS so Ill try this soon!
