Windows search restrictions

I’m runnning Windows XP, but I assume this pertains to all versions of Windows:

Does restricting the search parameters speed up the search process in any way, or does it simply limit the files that are displayed in the Results window?

The Windows search feature allows you to specify various parameters:
[ul][li]partial file name[/li][li]date of modification[/li][li]file size [/li][li]etc.[/ul]Obviously you need to fill in some sort of info to find your file, but which parameters may help speed up the search? [/li]
Does Windows index files such that if I give it a partial file name and a “within last week” restriction it won’t even bother looking at the names of files older than a week?

Or does it look at every file name and earmark it for display if it meets my parameters?

Indexed or non-indexed? It still has to look at every file to know how big it is or what date it was created on, doesn’t it?

The fastest way to speed up searches is Indexing and defragmenting.
