So I am looking for a recomendation on a good windows x server. I have seen some free ones but I am concerned about their security.

Exceed, WinaXe, StarNet and BlueZone were the ones that I saw which cost money, and most of them seemed to have good ssh clients along with support for GnuPlot, and the x apps we are running at my company.

Just wondering if anyone has an opinion on this.

PS Exceed (aka hummingbird) seemed very expensive (545) for a x server, did I miss something?

I have a machine using Hummingbird and one using Kia! X (Attachmate). Exceed has always run without incident. Last year somebody high up decided that all our machines would be re-tooled to use Kia, and now we have more calls into tech support than ever.

I don’t know if this varies depending on the application to be translated. My apps are all wide area network access portal GUIs so YMMV.

For free, you might consider Cygwin - complete with X server. It’s worked very well for me, but I don’t know about its security.

Cygwin uses xauth to prevent unauthorized access to your display. That plus X11 tunneling through the firewall has worked well enough for me.

I have been using Labtam 's XWinPro every day for about four years. Some of my coworkers had some problems getting their X clipboard to interact with the Windows clipboard, but other than that I haven’t heard any complaints. It’s certainly been rock solid for me.

That said, it’s probably worth trying Cygwin first, as it’s free.

I use X on a daily basis, and have used both StarNet XWin32 and CygWin XFree pretty extensively. Until recently, I would have given the nod to StarNet, despite the cost, because of a slight performance edge. But in the latest version of StarNet, I find that copy-and-paste between X and Windows applications is unreliable, while this works consistently under CygWin. So, for the past few months, I’ve gone exclusively with CygWin.

I should note that I also had CygWin installed in order to use the g++ compiler and xemacs, so adding X on top of that was a fairly natural and painless step.
