Windows XP Memory question

I have a co-worker whose new computer has windows XP, and he cannot get a program to run. (a program for DNA analysis called Sequencher). The manufactuers claim that he has too much RAM and he needs to lower the memory below a Gig. Is there a way to lower the memory for a specific program, or perhaps to lower the total memory (by booting a different way, perhaps?)?

Thanks

Is he comfortable with opening the case and pulling a mem module?

Is the manufacturer going to patch it? That’s clearly a bug that they should fix.

I meant the manufacturer of Sequencher.

Sequencher’s manufactuers are giving us the run around. I doubt it will be fixed anytime soon.

What are the system requirements for the program to run. Check on the box, or in the help section etc… Does it just say something to the extent of “At least 64mb memory” Or does it say that it must be less then 1 gig. If it just says “at least…” you should be able to get a refund, or get the problem resolved in one way or another. Anyways back to your question. I belive in bios, or windows, (somewhere I just don’t remember where) there is a way to get the computer to only use some of the memory. It’s a method that people will use to troubleshoot memory problems. You could probably putz around in the bios settings and find it. Oh wait, I just remembered, I’m pretty sure it’s in windows somewhere, I’ll try to find it and get back to you.

  1. one option is to physically remove one or more RAM chips.

  2. here’s an article that deals with the problems of too much RAM and a work-around to limit the RAM used.

not sure if it applies in your specific case, but it’s worth a try.

  1. Hi, Opal!

  2. this is a wild shot, but i’m wondering if any of the new BIOS’es have an option to disable a specific RAM slot. anyone know whether such an option exists ?

We pretty much need the program to do work here (especially the project he is on). Sequencher claims to be XP compatable, but the tech support people said too much memory is bad for it (i have never heard that excuse myself). None of the other comps have XP, and the software works on them (the registered version is around $3000), but i believe the memory on them is under a gig, so i don’t know if it is XP oriented or not. No one here has XP at home, so no one really knows what to do.
